Trust Associate Specialist-Emergency Medicine

This is an exciting opportunity for Specialty Doctor rolefor medical staff who wish to maintain and enhance their emergency medicineskills and experience. You will be part of a vibrant and dedicated Emergency Department(ED) team, working on the shop floor.

You will be given the opportunity to develop an interest intrauma management and acute resuscitation.

There is an opportunity for the successful candidate toexplore a specialist interest relating to Emergency Medicine and a generous1.5SPA is provided per week. Further information is available.

Consideration will be given to assisting with theachievement of CESR qualification and this will attract an additional 0.5 SPA.

There is a degree of flexibility with working hours; furtherinformation is available from the department.


Main duties of the job

Specific clinical areas include:-

To act as Team Leader in the resuscitation of seriouslytraumatised patients and those with critical illness.

Assist in the smooth integration of the EmergencyDepartment and Urgent Care services.

To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-daymanagement of the Emergency Department

To have responsibility for and actively participate incontinuing professional development (CPD) utilising a minimum of 1 PAs a weekfor self-direct study.

The new appointees will be expected to join the middlegrade body in leading by example, managing the sickest patients, engaging withthe juniors to ensure safe and timely management and working with the nursingstaff to ensure adequate patient flow. They will be the most senior doctor inthe ED at certain times of the day- currently midnight to 0800. Therefore aminimum of 4 years experience in Emergency Medicine is essential.

For management purposes and use of resourcesthe post holders will be accountable to the clinical lead and will ensure theeffective and efficient use of resources allocated.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Person Specification


Experience

* Need minimum of 5 years post-graduate experience in Emergency Medicine or attained CT3 ACCS competencies with further experience as middle grade in EM. Experience working in a UK Emergency Department.
* Already working towards CESR.
* Level I ultrasound sign off.
* Experience working in a UK Emergency Department.
* Already working towards CESR.

Qualifications

* MBBS or equivalent
* Must have x2 of: ATLS/ETC, ALS, APLS/ EPALs
* MRCEM
* Instructor on life support courses
* Additional courses relevant to EM eg level 1 US, HMIMMS, NLS


Special Skills and Knowledge

* Competences or equivalent with Skills equivalent to EM Higher specialist trainee.
* Completed audit or Quality Improvement Projects relevant to Emergency Medicine
* Evidence of research and publication in peer reviewed journals


Special Requirements

* Able to work flexibly with colleagues to provide services
* Able to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team, motivating and influencing others.
* Able to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses, management and other agencies.
* Experience of teaching students and other members of the multi-disciplinary team

* Full Registration with the GMC
* Leave to work in UK Evidence of compliance with standards of Good Medical Practice
