Overview
Practice Nurse position at Sussex Primary Care – The Avenue Surgery, Brighton. The post holder delivers general practice nursing care to the whole practice population, applying evidence-based practice for immediate nursing needs and long-term conditions, and providing preventative health care in line with local policies and procedures. The role requires safe clinical decision-making and collaborative work with the practice team, within the scope of practice and the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
Responsibilities
* Assist in and perform routine patient care tasks as indicated, including wound care, Doppler, removal of sutures/clips, urinalysis, chronic disease management, venepuncture, routine and childhood immunisations, travel clinic duties, asthma and COPD management, hypertension management, diabetes management, ear syringing, and chaperoning as required.
* Follow agreed clinical protocols and maintain infection prevention and control standards.
* Monitor vaccine fridge temperatures and stock levels; maintain clinical rooms and equipment; order vaccines when required.
* Maintain accurate records and participate in practice/clinical meetings; undertake home visits when needed.
* Support QoF programmes and income generation relevant to the role; perform other delegated duties as appropriate.
* Communicate effectively with patients, carers and colleagues; advocate for patients and ensure informed consent and accessibility of information.
* Deliver care according to NSF, NICE guidelines and evidence-based practice; participate in quality governance, audits, and incident/complaints learning processes.
* Contribute to development of local guidelines, protocols and standards; promote the role of the Practice Nurse in general practice.
* Supervise Healthcare Assistants; manage referrals and ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs in line with legal requirements.
Qualifications and Experience
* Essential: Registered Nurse with current UK registration; experience of working as a qualified nurse with ability to prioritise needs and make informed decisions; knowledge of current primary care policy and national legislation.
* Desirable: General Practice or relevant primary care experience; specialist courses (e.g., CHD, diabetes, family planning, asthma and COPD care, infection control); experience in GP practice; supervision/line management experience.
Skills and Knowledge
* Ability to provide high-quality patient care and work independently; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; computer literacy; strong team-working abilities.
* Competence in reading/read coding and using information technology for care planning and audit processes.
* Understanding of legal issues around vulnerable patients and domestic violence; ability to refer appropriately in line with policy.
