The post holder will be highly committed, enthusiastic and innovative with excellent clinical and communication skills and will join our expanding friendly team within the Obstetric and Imaging ultrasound departments. The role involves providing a high‑quality ultrasound service, prioritising workload and producing comprehensive, independently written ultrasound reports.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide high‑quality ultrasound service, prioritising workload and producing comprehensive independently written reports.
* Communicate complex information to clinicians and patients.
* Train and support junior staff and trainees.
* Maintain professional and technical standards relevant to ultrasound services.
* Participate in planning, coordinating and implementing new services and strategies to enhance patient pathways.
* Keep the Professional Lead for Ultrasound fully informed of issues within ultrasound.
* Attend relevant meetings, both internally and externally to the Trust.
* Establish and maintain effective communication with Imaging and multidisciplinary teams.
* Challenge current working practices and promote continuous improvement.
* Participate in recruitment and selection of staff.
* Coordinate routine maintenance of equipment and manage breakdowns, liaising with external companies.
* Independently undertake and report on ultrasound examinations, differentiating between normal and pathological findings.
* Use analytical and judgemental skills to view scan images, assess technical quality and determine when additional views are required.
* Be aware of the importance of other diagnostic investigations.
* Make recommendations for further imaging assessment and referral where necessary after consultation with a Radiologist.
* Inform appointment scheduling and be responsible for own caseload.
* Prioritise patients independently and organise workload from various referral pathways.
* Receive telephone enquiries from patients, wards or medical staff regarding clinical procedures or results.
* Maintain patients’ dignity during examinations of an intimate nature.
* Deal with operational pressures and developments within ultrasound on a day‑to‑day basis, providing specialist support to staff.
* Independently assess and justify examinations using department protocols and guidelines.
* Ensure implementation of examination protocols.
* Attend clinical meetings, feed back to the team and inform service improvement.
* Maintain a flexible approach to working hours, including extended days and weekend duty to promote a 7‑day service.
* Act as a role model for all other staff.
* Assist in developing a learning environment by maintaining up‑to‑date professional knowledge through CPD and demonstrating a proactive commitment to improving standards of service.
* Train, supervise and assess undergraduates, postgraduates and clinicians in the specialist field of ultrasound.
* Provide guidance, support and mentorship to less experienced sonographers.
* Be accountable for own professional activities using a high degree of autonomy within the limitations of personal expertise and skill.
* Possess a high level of knowledge over a range of ultrasound procedures and/or a high level of expertise in a particular area of ultrasound.
* Give specialist and expert opinion to a wide range of health‑care professionals.
* Provide information that can directly affect diagnosis or treatment.
* Undertake prolonged periods of intense concentration to obtain, interpret and record suitable images in a dynamic environment.
* Maintain concentration during frequent interruptions from patients and staff.
* Have well‑developed hand‑eye coordination combined with special awareness for precise acquisition of diagnostic images.
* Relate to and communicate with all patients and visitors in a sensitive and empathetic manner.
* Give clear explanations to patients about ultrasound examinations, including risk, accuracy and limitations, especially for procedures that require consent.
* Use appropriate levels of tact and persuasion when dealing with aggressive behaviour, cultural differences, special needs and those with newly diagnosed illnesses.
* Promote best practice when advising and disseminating knowledge to the profession and beyond.
* Be competent in the operation of the Radiology Information System / PACS System.
* Supervise the activity of less experienced sonographers, assistants and trainees within the ultrasound workplace.
