Gardener/Handyperson and Housekeeper Couple (Live in)
An exciting opportunity has become available for a Gardener and Housekeeper couple on a full time and permanent basis for a private, historic property nestled in the heart of the East Sussex countryside. The roles would suit a passionate and driven all rounded couple in their respective industries. This is a live-in position offering long-term stability, excellent working conditions, and the chance to contribute to the care and presentation of both the house and its extensive gardens.
The estate extends across 800 acres and encompasses three private residences. Within its grounds lie a working farm, a business park, areas of woodland, formal gardens and much more. At its heart stands the main Grade II listed Georgian house, which has recently undergone extensive restoration and refurbishment. The surrounding gardens are the next area of focus: they have been cleared and are now ready for transformation. The incoming Gardener will work closely with the Head Gardener and existing horticultural team and external landscaping team to help deliver the new garden design, while also maintaining the wider grounds which already feature formal lawns, mature woodland, a walled kitchen garden, ornamental borders, a lake and water features.
The all-rounded Gardener / Handyperson will join a small team on the estate. The successful candidate will take pride in maintaining both the gardens and estate infrastructure to a high standard. This is a varied, hands-on role for someone with a can-do attitude, who is as comfortable tending to plants and lawns as they are carrying out general maintenance and practical tasks across the property. Handyperson duties may include; general property and outbuilding maintenance including minor repairs, painting, and basic carpentry, maintaining pathways, fencing, gates and driveways and monitoring the condition of tools, supplies and informing owners when replacements are required. Occasional assistance with moving furniture, setting up for events or other estate-related support tasks may be required.
Duties under the responsibility of the Housekeeper will include the day-to-day upkeep and presentation of the main house to a high standard. This will involve regular cleaning of all rooms and communal areas, managing household laundry and ironing, changing bed linen and towels, and ensuring bedrooms and bathrooms are always fresh and well-presented. The Housekeeper will also be responsible for accepting deliveries, keeping household supplies well-stocked, and carrying out local shopping and errands as required. Attention to detail, discretion, and a proactive attitude are essential in maintaining the smooth running and comfort of the household.
This role is offered on a live-out basis; however, accommodation may be available if required. Options include a 1-bedroom annexe, suitable for a single occupant or couple, or a 3-bedroom cottage with its own garden with dependents and pets accepted. Both properties can be provided furnished or unfurnished, with all utilities covered by the owners. The only cost to the occupant will be council tax, which remains the candidate’s responsibility.
Please note, the successful candidates with be offered subject to extensive reference checks (both written and verbal), DBS check as well as signing an NDA. Candidates will also need to provide evidence of qualifications held and hold a full driver’s licence due to the rural location of the property.
SALARY: Circa £70,000 combined Salary + Accommodation
