About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Project Engineer to join our Special Projects business in Ampthill, Bedfordshire. You will play a key role in the delivery of complex engineering projects that support some of the UK’s most advanced defence capabilities.

This is a hands-on role, and you will be responsible for supporting the full engineering lifecycle – from shaping technical requirements and developing design solutions through to integration, testing and delivery.

Working within a multi-disciplined Integrated Project Team (IPT), you will collaborate with engineers, project managers, and key stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to the highest quality standards.

The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic, determined and committed and a confident self-starter. They will be a team player with ability to work in a multi-functional organisation, coupled with excellent communication skills and stakeholder management ability.

A key requirement of this role is the ability to obtain and maintain a high‑level security clearance. If you do not currently hold the required clearance, we can support you through the application process.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Manage the end-to-end engineering lifecycle for assigned projects, ensuring alignment with technical, safety, and quality standards.
2. Define and interpret technical requirements, translating customer needs into robust engineering solutions.
3. Product and maintain design documentation, drawings, specifications and test plans.
4. Coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams including systems, mechanical, materials, electrical, integration and test engineers to ensure design coherence and successful integration.
5. Provide technical support during build, commissioning, and in-service phases.
6. Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering processes, tools, and best practices.
7. Ensure all engineering activities complies with Defence Standards, quality management systems and Health and Safety regulations.
8. Support the Project Chief Engineer to undertake any assigned engineering assignments and investigations.
9. Support both the assigned Programme Engineering Manager and Project Chief Engineer in technical planning, progress reporting, and risk management.
10. Lead and contribute to design reviews, verification, validation and configuration management activities.
11. Liaise with project leads, suppliers and internal stakeholders to ensure effective technical communications throughout the project.

Required skills, qualifications and experience

12. Degree in an Engineering discipline (. Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, or Aerospace Engineering).
13. Proven experience delivering engineering projects within the Defence, Aerospace, or related industry.
14. Proven experience delivering engineering concepts into manufacture and test phases.
15. Strong understanding of system engineering principles and lifecycle management.
16. Experience of technical documentation, configuration control and quality assurance processes.
17. Ability to plan, schedule, coordinate and problem solve effectively both as an individual and as part of team solve effectively.
18. Experience with CAD tools. CREO CAD software and experience of using the tool to produce complex parametric designs would be beneficial.
19. Excellent communicator with strong presentation and stakeholder management skills.
20. Good computer skills.
21. Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team environment. Excellent team working skills are essential.
22. Must be able to work in the UK without restrictions in accordance with UK National Law and be prepared to successfully undertake an appropriate level of UK National Security Vetting according to UK Government National Security Vetting criteria: a minimum of SC Clearance will be required for the role, however holding a DV or being prepared to go through an application immediately will be beneficial.
Desirable:
23. Experience of working within the defence industry, MoD, or other complex engineering environments is desirable.
24. Knowledge of UK Defence Standards, JSPs, or equivalent industry regulations.
25. Understanding of risk management, change control and verification and validation practices.
26. Able to use Windchill PDM system.
27. Self-drive / self-starter will be required in order to deliver programme activities and milestones, and the role will on occasions be customer facing.
