We are working with a specialist government organisation providing comprehensive engineering support across a wide range of Defence avionics, electronics, and components.
Our client are are seeking experienced Mechanical Engineers to join their team in Stafford.
Location: Stafford (no remote working).
IR35: in scope
Pay Rate to Candidate: £21.51/hr UMBRELLA
This is a hands‑on, workshop‑based role, where you’ll work on a variety of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems used by the Armed Forces to keep their equipment mission‑ready.
Types of Equipment You’ll Work On
As a Mechanical Engineer in this MOD role, you’ll maintain, repair, and refurbish Ground Support Equipment (GSE), the vital machinery that keeps military aircraft and vehicles ready for use. This includes:
* Aircraft tugs and tow tractors – move aircraft on the ground.
* Hydraulic test rigs – used to test aircraft systems.
* Power units (GPU/APU) – supply electrical power to aircraft while on the ground.
* Air compressors and pneumatic tools – used for maintenance operations.
* Hydraulic jacks and lifting equipment – used for aircraft and vehicle servicing.
* Fuel and refuelling units – mobile tankers and pumps for refuelling aircraft and vehicles.
* Maintenance vehicles and mobile workshops – fitted with tools and repair systems.
* Cooling and air‑conditioning units – used for testing or supporting avionics systems.
* Generators and lighting towers – provide power and lighting in operational areas.
* General mechanical systems, such as:
o Hydraulics and pneumatics
o Mechanical linkages, drive systems, and pumps
Key Responsibilities
* Inspect and repair equipment – Check, fix, and restore Ground Support Equipment.
* Find and solve mechanical problems – Diagnose faults in engines, hydraulics, and other systems, then carry out the right repairs.
* Maintain and test machinery – Perform regular servicing and testing to ensure all equipment is safe and reliable.
* Keep accurate records – Update maintenance logs, inspection reports, and technical documentation correctly.
* Work safely and efficiently – Complete all work safely, on time, and to a high standard.
* Support improvement projects – Suggest better ways of working or improving maintenance processes.
Essential Skills and Experience
* Demonstrable experience in mechanical inspection, repair, and maintenance.
* Strong hands‑on experience in one or more of the following areas:
o Automotive (cars, heavy vehicles, diesel/petrol engines)
o Marine or aviation ground support
o Hydraulics and pneumatics
o RAF Trade Group 5 or similar engineering background
* Computer literate with basic proficiency in MS Office and maintenance record systems.
* Holds (or is eligible to meet) EngTech professional registration in accordance with UK‑SPEC.
Qualifications
* Level 4 qualification with an advanced/higher apprenticeship, or
* Level 3 qualification with a nationally recognised engineering apprenticeship and relevant engineering experience.
