Medical Retina Research Fellow
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a 12‑month fixed‑term training contract for a Medical Retina Research Fellow to develop clinical and research skills within our ophthalmology department.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide clinical care for patients with complex retinal conditions including uveitis, age‑related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions and inherited retinal diseases.
* Assist on cataract surgery lists and other ocular procedures as required.
* Participate in national clinical trials and conduct research activity, including data collection, analysis and publication.
* Contribute to teaching of junior staff and medical students; deliver audit projects and clinical learning sessions.
* Maintain and develop an educational portfolio under supervision in line with the specialty training curriculum.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential Criteria
* MRCOphth or equivalent.
* Full GMC registration (or eligibility).
* Knowledge of medical retinal conditions and OCT interpretation.
* Minimum 12 months of postgraduate ophthalmology practice.
* At least 12 months NHS experience.
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* Ability to apply sound clinical judgement and effective teamwork skills.
* Strong communication, organisation and multi‑professional collaboration abilities.
Desirable Criteria
* Post‑CCT status.
* Further qualifications, research or teaching experience.
* Experience performing intra‑vitreal injections or laser treatments for diabetic retinopathy.
* Knowledge of equality, diversity and inclusion principles.
