Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join the expanding anaesthetic department at Luton & Dunstable Hospital as a vascular anaesthetist. Vascular services will be translocated to the Luton site from Bedford with the expansion of arterial vascular service at Luton.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic consultant to join our busy, friendly and expanding department.

The appointee will anaesthetise specifically for specialist vascular lists and a variety of other elective surgical specialties. Our case mix is interesting, culture supportive and the Trust has a progressive approach to service development and clinician involvement. The non-resident on-call commitment covers emergency surgery and obstetrics. The appointee will participate in a 1:20 on call commitment based at Luton & Dunstable Hospital.

Luton and Dunstable hospital is located within easy access to central London and the Midlands. London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes’ drive from the hospital.

Main duties of the job

The main duties and responsibilities of the post include:

•Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients undergoing anaesthesia.

•To undertake sessions in vascular theatres, vascular pre assessment clinics and MDTs in the vascular anaesthesia service. The job will also involve working flexibly to cover various surgical specialities via job planning.

•To undertake duties as part of the on call out of hours rota covering general emergency, maternity theatre and paediatric emergencies.

•To work constructively and flexibly with colleagues in the Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Integrated Pain Management to provide the best care for patients.

•Teaching and training of intermediate grade and junior medical staff, nursing staff and medical students.

•To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.

•To have responsibility for and actively participate in Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The Trust is committed to providing the time and financial support for these activities.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Medical Degree
2. FRCA or equivalent
3. ALS/ATLS or European equivalent
4. SIA in vascular Anaesthesia (or evidence of advanced training in vascular anaesthesia)

Desirable criteria

5. MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research
6. Experience in the provision of preoperative assessment (general) or vascular patients
7. Accreditation of CPET interpretation or previous experience of CPET interpretation

Registration

Essential criteria

8. Full GMC registration (GMC Licence to Practice is mandatory before employment commences)
9. Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register: CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview) orCESR (must be on Specialist Register at time of applying)

Clinical Effectiveness

Essential criteria

10. Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate ongoing CPD.
11. Experience of guideline appraisal
12. Participation in relevant local audits
13. Ability to interpret and apply clinical research

Desirable criteria

14. Participation in relevant national audits, especially in vascular anaesthesia/surgery
15. Evidence of quality improvement activity in vascular anaesthesia

Teaching

Essential criteria

16. Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students.

Desirable criteria

17. Has attended Teaching the Teachers or similar course.

Personnel Skills

Essential criteria

18. Ability to co-operate in a democratic team environment
19. Flexible attitude, team player with good management skills
20. Leadership Skills

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria

21. Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance.

Personnel Circumstances

Essential criteria

22. Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for purposes of on-call emergencies.
23. Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance
24. Satisfactory DBS clearance

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria

25. Excellent all round experience of DGH work
26. Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Anaesthetics and CEPOD list management skills
27. Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and delivering service without direct supervision
28. Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in vascular Anaesthesia

Desirable criteria

29. Additional training in vascular anaesthesia beyond that required for CCT (or equivalent), ie, a fellowship in vascular anaesthesia
