We require an ambitious and enthusiastic teacher to lead within our English Department as Second in Department and further develop the leadership capacity and direction in this high performing team.
The English Department is very successful. Our English results are above the national average and we have high numbers of students progressing to study English at A level.
The successful candidate must be an outstanding practitioner, passionate about English education.
The candidate appointed to the post of 2i/c will be given specific responsibilities and teach across the key stages.
This post is particularly suitable for an experienced practitioner looking for a leadership position.
Responsibilities of Second in English:
Leadership
1. Assist with the leadership and management of the English Department as directed by the Head of Department
2. Lead some aspects of the internal Performance Development systems
3. Take responsibility for some aspects of the Quality Assurance programme in conjunction with the Head of Department
4. Use (or if appropriate, improve on) existing systems to monitor performance in English classes
5. Set timely and meaningful formative assessments, with existing whole cohort tests as a minimum
6. Identify students for intervention early, whilst maintaining student independence
7. Assist the Head of Department in producing strategies with respect to areas for improvement
Teaching & Learning
8. Promoting and seeking opportunities for innovative approaches to teach English, both in the post holder’s own teaching and the way he/she encourages others
9. Develop practice within the department to engrain deeper understanding of concepts
10. Assist the Head of Department in sharing best practice
11. Seek opportunities to collaborate with other English departments
Curriculum changes
12. Assist the Head of Department in the delivery of the GCSE Specification, and any other curriculum changes that occur while the post holder remains in post
13. Keeping up to date with specifications and assessment materials from examination boards and developing SoW and teaching strategies as assigned by the Head of Department
14. Developing the post holders teaching and that of others teaching with the team.

17. Courses of further study relevant to the post
18. A record of sustained, outstanding classroom practice
19. Evidence of active involvement in professional development
20. Excellent organisation skills
Knowledge and Understanding:
21. A commitment to ongoing research into teaching and learning strategies
22. Excellent awareness of current educational developments
23. Excellent understanding of current issues related to the subject
24. Ability to plan lessons effectively
25. Evidence of high level classroom skills
26. An understanding of and commitment to the ethos of the College.
