Job Summary
We are looking to appoint a motivated individual to join our Payroll Team at York Hospital. We are a friendly team providing a vital back‑office service.
Successful candidates with NHS and payroll experience will commence as a Band 4. If you don't have any payroll or NHS experience, training will be provided to gain a payroll qualification and you will start as a Band 3 moving to Band 4 on successful completion.
It is essential that this work is carried out accurately and efficiently. You must demonstrate the necessary organisational, administrative and communication skills, the ability to work under pressure and to use your own initiative.
Main Duties
Provide simple day‑to‑day control of a section of the Trust's payroll. Operate on a self‑managed basis to ensure consistent high‑level performance delivery in a confidential, accountable and customer‑focused manner.
Willingness to embrace new technologies and change. Experience in PAYE and pensions is beneficial but not essential, as training will be provided.
Good interpersonal, organisational and planning skills, excellent communication and customer‑care skills. This position offers a good development opportunity with potential for further progression.

Job Responsibilities
* Handle day‑to‑day payroll processing for a section of the Trust.
* Maintain accurate and confidential payroll records.
* Apply PAYE and pension rules, providing training to ensure compliance.
* Communicate with employees regarding payroll queries.
* Support payroll system enhancements and new technology adoption.
* Provide excellent customer service to internal stakeholders.
Person Specification
Essential
* Good standard of general education to GCSE level or equivalent, including Maths and English Language.
* NVQ Level 2 in administration.
* Computer literacy skills – including Microsoft Office, Excel and Word.
* Office experience and knowledge of payroll systems (any payroll experience is a plus).
* Good organisational, prioritisation and communication skills.
* Ability to work in a team and under pressure.
Desirable
* Previous office/administrative experience in an NHS environment.
* Experience in PAYE and pensions.
* Payroll experience.
* Problem‑solving skills.
