Who we are
The Hockey Museum is the first and only museum of hockey in the world and aims to preserve, share and celebrate the sport’s rich history and heritage. As an Arts Council accredited museum and registered charity, The Hockey Museum is home to an extensive collection of hockey archives, artefacts and memorabilia, which it makes accessible to the hockey family and the wider public through digital marketing, outreach projects and exhibitions.
The Museum’s small staff team (1.8 FTE) is supported by a community of volunteers drawn from the local community, the ‘hockey family’ and higher education establishments.

Can you help us?
After 13 years of enthusiastic collecting, The Hockey Museum is facing challenges borne of its collections management policies and practices, which its curatorial staff intend to tackle with a robust Collections Review and Rationalisation project plan. At this key juncture, we are seeking motivated individuals with demonstrable expertise and experience of collections management across multiple museums to join the Board of Trustees. Their role will support delivery of The Hockey Museum’s new Strategic Plan and guide staff, fellow trustees and volunteers into a future of sustainable collections practice.
Responsibilities
* Care for our Collection – Create and implement a fully resourced Collections Review & Rationalisation Plan to update policies and practice relating to collections management.
* Build our new home – Develop a relocation plan to ensure that the collection and materials are carefully transitioned into a new home, when required.
* Build our new home – Develop the scope for a ‘new home’ – a traditional museum that benefits staff, volunteers, visitors, and researchers. The scope should include non-negotiables and wishlist, and high-level financial projection.
* Reflect a more digital world – Prioritise and prepare our collection for digitisation, initially focusing on priorities outlined in the new Digitisation Plan.
* Reflect a more digital world – Complete the indexing of the Oral History collection and ensure it is accessible through appropriate digital platforms.
How it works
We are a small, dynamic team. Daytime Board meetings are held quarterly and Trustees are encouraged to attend museum events when possible. We are looking for a Trustee to actively contribute to guiding and supporting the Museum’s staff in collections management outside of these meetings.
The Hockey Museum continues to work to diversify its Board of Trustees and welcomes applications from all ages and backgrounds. As a small charity, we regret it is not possible to offer any travelling or other expenses to Trustees. All Trustee positions are voluntary.
