Overview

The Environment Agency is recruiting for a fixed‑term role, up to two years, to support the regulation of the energy sectors. The role is part of the Energy & COMAH team within the Energy and Manufacturing Industries Regulation Directorate. The position involves providing expert support, technical leadership, and incident response in a highly collaborative, cross‑functional environment.


Role Summary

As a senior advisor for the energy sectors, you will give advice on the regulatory requirements that apply to combustion plants and other energy facilities. You will develop strategy, deliver environmental outcomes, and commission and manage external research projects. The role requires close collaboration with internal teams, external stakeholders such as Defra, DESNZ, and industry associations, and participation in incident response alongside business continuity support.


Responsibilities

* Provide expert support and technical leadership through advice, guidance, and training to internal and external stakeholders.
* Develop sector strategy and produce tools to regulate, support development, and deliver environmental outcomes.
* Commission and manage external research projects where required.
* Work closely with internal and external stakeholders including Defra, DESNZ, operations teams, trade associations, and key industry players.
* Actively participate in the incident response role, making yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident.


Team

The Energy & COMAH team leads on defining standards for the energy sectors, providing strategic direction, tools for regulation, guidance and training, and environmental best practice. The team uses evidence, expertise, and innovation to support delivery, influence policy and legislation, and secure resources.


Experience & Skills Required

* Relevant technical and regulatory knowledge in the energy sector, with experience of regulating or working within relevant processes such as combustion plants, waste incineration, and refineries.
* Ability to build and maintain good relationships with colleagues, operators, partner regulators, government, trade bodies, and academia.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, encouraging others to consider diversity issues.
* Proven teamwork skills, including cooperation to achieve common goals, prioritising and flexibly supporting each other.

* Works in Teams – collaborate effectively to deliver portfolios of work.
* Builds and Sustains Relationships – develop and maintain effective working relationships with a range of external and internal stakeholders.
