Principal Safety Consultant – Role
We are looking for a Principal Safety Consultant to join our team. As a leader, you will guide safety engineering and assurance services across a range of rail engineering projects, support junior consultants, and lead the development of safety protocols, risk assessment methodologies, and project quality.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead complex rail safety engineering and assurance services, applying methods aligned with standards such as EN50126, EN50129, IEC 61508, CSM-RA, and the Railways Interoperability Regulations.
* Lead certification and authorisation projects for new railway stations, assessing National Technical Specification Notices, Infrastructure and PRM, and National Technical Rules such as GIRT7020 and GIRT7073.
* Lead bidding, winning and delivery of commercially viable projects, collaborating with clients to align objectives and outcomes.
* Contribute to safety assurance, approvals and CSM work for major infrastructure projects, e.g. National Train Control Centre in Dublin, Crewe Hub remodelling, and the East Coast Mainline.
* Provide support to contractors for CSM and approvals on station and civil works.
* Work on global projects in Australia, the US, Canada, Asia and the Middle East, and contribute remotely from the UK.
* Demonstrate flexibility by managing multiple activities and balancing workloads across projects.
* Lead interactive workshops with clients and stakeholders.
Key Competencies and Experience
* Experience delivering safety engineering and assurance services to rail projects using standards such as CSM-RA and RIR.
* Background in risk management, systems engineering, safety engineering and interoperability.
* Preferably with a civil engineering background.
* Prior experience on major rail infrastructure projects, particularly within the UK or in the consultancy sector.
* Experience in railway station projects, track and civil works, gauging and structure assessments.
* Exceptional organisational and prioritisation skills.
* Ability to support business development by writing proposals and developing client relationships.
* Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
* Experience in cyber‑security is desirable but not essential for this role.
