Speech and Language Therapist – Acute Neurosciences Speciality

The post holder will be a Speech and Language Therapist within the Acute Neurosciences Speciality at John Radcliffe Hospital, playing a key role in delivering high-quality, person-centred care for patients on Neuroscience inpatient wards. This may also include opportunities to work on the highly specialised Neuro Intensive Care Unit. The successful post holder will work closely with the Clinical Lead SLT for Acute Neurosciences, contribute as an integral member of the wider Adult Speech and Language Therapy Department, and collaborate effectively with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure the best outcomes for patients.
Main duties of the job
1. Utilize specialist clinical skills to assess, diagnose, and manage a specialist caseload of adults with acquired swallowing and communication disorders on the acute neuroscience inpatient wards, including opportunities to work on the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit.
2. Select and deliver high-quality assessments and evidence-based interventions to ensure effective therapy.
3. Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team, actively participating in MDT meetings to support therapy planning and patient discharges.
4. Independently manage a clinical caseload, prioritizing workload and making autonomous decisions regarding patient care.
5. Provide second opinions to colleagues as needed.
6. Contribute to audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives within the specialty and across the wider SLT Department as needed.
7. Take responsibility for providing clinical teaching and supervision to other healthcare professionals, students, and SLT colleagues as required and with support from the Clinical Lead SLT for Acute Neurosciences.
8. Provide cross-site cover, supporting the caseloads of other Speech and Language Therapists within the Trust as needed.
9. Collaborate with SLTs across the Neurosciences pathway to ensure continuity of care, including colleagues at the local Level 1 Neurorehabilitation Unit in Oxford (Oxford Centre for Enablement).

Job responsibilities
1. Assess, develop, and implement specialist evidence-based Speech and Language Therapy interventions. Make appropriate clinical decisions following assessments, including differential diagnosis, and develop care plans based on best practice.
2. Generate written reports reflecting specialist knowledge.
3. Provide appropriate specialist intervention and evaluate outcomes, managing complex caseloads effectively.
4. Communicate diagnosis and treatment plans effectively to patients, families, and carers, within legal frameworks for patients who lack capacity.
5. Advise others on the management and care of patients with communication and swallowing disorders.
6. Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to achieve patient-centred care.
7. Liaise with professionals across various locations and agencies.
8. Maintain concentration during patient management, monitoring auditory, visual, and kinaesthetic aspects of communication, and adapting strategies as needed.
