As a Senior Survey Control Engineer at HS2 you will provide expert advice in the development of survey methods and strategies for the HS2 Programme, provide technical guidance on all aspects of surveying matters with a focus on the creation and implementation of project wide survey control systems, and oversee the management of topographical survey related activities across the HS2 programme and ensure that the coordination responsibilities of HS2 are covered.
About the role
HS2’s survey control tools and standards will be set and maintained. Key responsibilities include:
* Set and maintain HS2’s survey control tools and standards
* Develop tools and systems to support delivery of survey control systems through effective document control and quality management
* Provide guidance and advice on survey methods, procedures, standardization and requirements
* Support audits (internal, external, 3rd party) to verify that survey requirements have been met
* Provide work direction and guidance to survey staff to assure completion of assigned tasks and other duties
* Ensure all survey related personnel are adequately trained in the survey processes and systems
* Actively promote and embed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) in all your work and support and comply with all organisational initiatives, policies and procedures on EDI.
About you
Skills:
* Provide specialist technical support and leadership on discipline specific scientific, technical and engineering principles to project development / delivery teams, knowing when to seek guidance from other Subject Matter Experts.
* Work as a Standard Owner, under the guidance of the Standard Discipline Owner.
* Provide technical, commercial management and leadership skills to support project development / delivery teams, working under supervision of line manager (or delegate).
* Communicate discipline‑specific technical ideas clearly to colleagues, using examples of application.
* Apply principles relating to standards, safety and the environment and articulate them.
* Apply principles and methods that ensure effective information management, modelling and data security; understand approaches and consequences to data creation, transformation and visualisation.
Knowledge:
* Current geospatial engineering activities used on HS2.
* Relevant policy, best practice guidance and surveying technological developments across geospatial engineering areas.
* Proficiency in Bentley Microstation, Descartes, Projectwise and Bentley Railtrack.
* Experience with ESRI ArcGIS and the concept of BIM including its application to large multi‑disciplinary projects.
* Understanding of relevant Network Rail standards.
* Commercial awareness including cost delivery, schedule targets and integrated solution delivery.
* Knowledge restricted to own discipline and professional qualification in Land Surveying, Survey and Mapping, Geospatial engineering or Geomatics.
* Chartered membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, or the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors, or equivalent professional experience.
Type of experience:
* Geospatial engineering on large scale projects at optioneering, design, and construction stages.
* Experience of projects including railways, ground and structural monitoring, tunnelling and green‑field environments.
* Experience of effectively communicating Geospatial engineering practices to multidisciplinary engineers and non‑technical external stakeholders.
