Overview
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced clinical pharmacist to take on a new key role at Queen Victoria Hospital (QVH). The position involves leading and developing the pharmacy service for theatre and pre‑assessment units. The role offers a novel model of working within our hospital, supporting the trust’s commitment to GIRFT (Getting It Right First Time) and the best outcomes for patients.
Responsibilities
* Prescribe medicines appropriately, accurately and timely on the day of surgery.
* Coordinate closely with consultant teams regarding necessary omissions or amendments of medications.
* Counsel and educate patients on medicines during their hospital stay to maximise surgical outcomes.
* Establish key relationships quickly and take ownership and accountability for implementing clinical pharmacy processes that run smoothly.
* Lead the development of guidelines, projects, audits and service improvements related to medicines and antimicrobials.
* Support the trust with its Green Plan within theatres.
* Provide and manage medicines optimisation for surgical patients, including prescribing on admission to theatres and in pre‑assessment and antimicrobial stewardship.
* Manage own case load and provide expert opinion on medicines where appropriate.
* Accept case referrals from pre‑assessment and provide expert opinion on medicine issues.
* Provide a framework for medicines governance, including auditing activities within peri‑operative services.
* Plan, manage, prescribe, monitor and review therapeutic programmes, demonstrating expert clinical knowledge in the management of peri‑operative medicines.
* Line‑manage a member of the pharmacy team and be part of the senior pharmacy team.
* Monitor and report on drug expenditure for peri‑operative services.
* Show self‑motivation, enthusiasm, and the ability to lead with minimal direction, with clear, sound judgement, evidence‑based practice and broad general clinical pharmacy knowledge.
Qualifications
* GPhC (GB) registered pharmacist.
* Post‑graduate clinical pharmacy diploma or equivalent experience.
* Excellent verbal and written English communication and presentation skills.
* Proven record of being a flexible team player able to cope with unpredictable work patterns.
Working Hours & Conditions
* Permanent full‑time post.
* No weekend duties currently, but bank holiday cover is expected; possible future weekend or late‑night work.
