Main duties of the job
* Delivering high‑quality nursing care in our Integrated sexual health clinics.
* Providing expert advice and support to patients regarding sexual health, contraception and wellbeing.
* Conducting assessments, offering counselling, and managing cases sensitively and confidentially.
* Promoting safe sexual practices and preventative health strategies.
* Contributing to health education sessions and outreach initiatives.
About us
Our purpose is to provide community health services to a patient population of over one million people in Derbyshire and Derby, as part of Joined Up Care Derbyshire.
We employ around 4,200 substantive staff, caring for patients in 11 community hospitals and more than 30 health centres, as well as in clinics, GP practices, schools, care homes and, increasingly, in people's own homes and via virtual consultations.
During the pandemic response we have led the implementation of public vaccination centres in collaboration with partners across health and social care.
Job responsibilities
The post holder will assess, plan and deliver all aspects of sexual health care and will need to be able to demonstrate the ability to undertake duties concurrent with this level of seniority from the list below in line with Faculty of Sexual Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH), British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) and NICE guidance:
* Promotion/issuing of all methods of contraception (e.g. fitting of long‑acting reversible contraception such as IUD and SDI).
* Screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
* Perform diagnostic procedures and provide treatment and management of STIs.
* Health Advising / Partner Notification and Result Management.
* Cervical cytology.
* Microscopy.
* Cryotherapy.
* Responsible for the identification and management of sexual partners who may have been exposed to an STI(s) to prevent onward transmission.
* Lead on partner notification for newly diagnosed HIV‑positive patients, supporting the HIV specialist nurses in elements of patient care and ongoing partner notification.
* Work alongside and support the results management and partner notification coordinators to manage the results notification process (specifically BBI).
* The post holder will have an understanding of safeguarding and the complexities surrounding patients with these additional needs, including young people, sexual assault victims, domestic abuse victims, and children at risk of exploitation.
* The post holder will also be responsible for the day‑to‑day aspects of supervision and training of the nursing team (band 5/HCA).
* Agreement in relation to which requirements apply will be reached individually.
Person Specification
Education, Qualifications and Training
* Registered Nurse – Level 1 adult, direct entry midwife or RMN.
* Current NMC registration.
* Fully competent in either BASHH STI competencies or hold CoSRH and LoC in IUT and SDI.
* Cryotherapy training.
* Microscopy trained – wet and dry prep.
* Venepuncture trained.
* HA experience including safeguarding / PN / results management.
* BASHH STIF HA competencies or equivalent.
* Cervical Cytology sample taker.
* Counselling.
* Teaching qualification.
Experience and Knowledge
* Knowledge of both clinical and psychosocial aspects of STI's including HIV.
* Working experience of PN skills.
* Experience of teaching nursing and non‑nursing students.
* Experience of audit and quality assurance.
* Knowledge of current contraceptive methods, sexual health care and treatment.
* Knowledge of safeguarding procedures.
* Experience working in the HA role.
* 2 years previous experience in a sexual health environment.
Skills and Attributes
* Excellent interpersonal skills and communication both written and oral.
* Knowledge around the diversity of people accessing a sexual health service.
* Counselling skills.
* Good numeracy skills and competence in data management.
* Self‑motivated.
