Detailed job description and main responsibilities
• To be the Lead Blood Sciences Biomedical Scientist, interpreting policy and regulations and advising the Trust on technical matters including complex issues
• Supervise and take responsibility for the service provision of the Blood Sciences Services. This will include all aspects of the clinical scientific & technical work, staff, equipment and quality system.
• To ensure that the Epic Beaker application in use in the laboratories is fit for purpose, properly maintained and fully functional. Where deficiencies become evident, to initiate an action plan to address the issues. To ensure all staff are trained in use of the IT system and carry out training when necessary
• In addition oversee all IT software and hardware in use in the laboratories (for example, analyser software, interfaces and the DART system), to evaluate before installation, to be fully conversant with functionality and train BMS staff in its use
• To provide expert, in depth advice to BMSs when results from analysers are equivocal or difficult to interpret due to complex problems in the analysis of particular samples
• To ensure that all equipment is maintained in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions and that all such procedures are documented
• To gather and analyse data for the purpose of monitoring and disseminating laboratory activity and expenditure information. This will include interrogating the Beaker application and other sources, use of spreadsheets to analyse and display data, and entering summary of information into reports, business plans and other documents as appropriate
• To be responsible for maintaining Health & Safety within the departments
• To ensure continuous training of scientific staff to maintain the services within the laboratories.

Education
Essential criteria
1. Master of Science degree
2. HCPC registration
3. Formal qualification in management & leadership
4. Evidence of continuing professional & personal development
5. Chartered Scientist status
Desirable criteria
6. Evidence of multidisciplinary blood sciences training
Skills
Essential criteria
7. Significant experience in managing and being scientific & technical lead in blood sciences departments
8. Long term experience of successfully managing multi-site services
9. Significant experience of managing multi- million pound budgets
10. Experience of implementing / achieving significant cost improvements
11. Experience of ability to communicate at high level with clinical consultants, anaesthetists, external specialist laboratories and regulatory bodies with regard to complex clinical issues
12. Experience of training, developing and competence assessing staff across levels 2-8b

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of our Staff
At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.
The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
