Job summary
This is a replacement post which has become vacant as the previous Consultant Psychiatrist has retired.
The post is a 10 PA position split between inpatient rehabilitation units across North and South Durham localities. The rehabilitation services are primarily based at Primrose Lodge (Chester-le-Street, 14 beds) and Willow Ward, West Park Hospital (Darlington, 15 beds).
The main acute inpatient beds for North Durham are at Lanchester Road Hospital, Durham, and for South Durham at West Park Hospital, Darlington. Currently, two wards at Lanchester Road Hospital and three wards at West Park Hospital admit patients with acute mental health issues.
Main duties of the job
The primary responsibility is to provide an active, recovery-focused rehabilitation service to patients in North and South Durham within the Adult Mental Health Directorate. The work is mainly inpatient-based with minimal community involvement.
Severe and enduring mental illness significantly impacts individuals' lives. An energetic rehabilitation service is vital for a modern, recovery-oriented adult mental health service. The post holder will lead this service.
Primrose Lodge will be the main focus for rehabilitation, while Willow Ward offers high-dependency support for more challenging, long-lasting cases.
The postholder will work closely with colleagues to offer a flexible, recovery-oriented service, emphasizing multidisciplinary teamwork and clinical leadership. Collaboration with other agencies to develop supported living schemes, employment services, and specialist providers will be essential, including liaising with commissioners.
