Apprentice Heavy Vehicle Mechanic Scatsta Garage – Sullom Voe Terminal, Shetland Islands, ZE1 0PQ This is a 4-year apprenticeship leading to a Modern Apprenticeship in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (SCQF Level 7). The programme includes: SVQ Level 3 IMI Diplomas Accreditation by the Institute of the Motor Industry Pay Rates Under 18: £8.00 per hour Age 18–20: £10.85 per hour Age 21 and over: £12.71 per hour Essential Requirements Full UK driving licence, or willingness and ability to obtain one when legally eligible Positive attitude and strong willingness to learn Commitment to health and safety standards Preferred Qualifications National 4 or National 5 (or equivalent) Maths, Science, or other technical subjects preferred What you’ll do: You will work alongside experienced mechanics in a busy, professional workshop, assisting in the maintenance and repair of heavy goods vehicles, vans, and plant equipment. This role combines hands-on practical experience with formal college training. All tools and personal protective equipment are provided. Key Responsibilities Assist senior mechanics with diagnostics, inspections, servicing, and repairs Learn fault-finding techniques and safe use of tools and equipment Carry out routine maintenance including oil changes, tyre rotations, and brake checks Attend college and complete all apprenticeship training requirements Maintain a clean and organised workspace Ensure repairs and servicing meet safety and quality standards Follow workshop safety procedures and operational protocols Manage time effectively to balance practical work and training Accurate and efficient support in vehicle maintenance and repair Full compliance with safety and operational standards Successful completion of training modules and assessments Contribution to high levels of customer satisfaction Support maintenance of approximately 120 vehicles per year Help reduce repair times and improve service delivery Achievement of apprenticeship training milestones What you’ll bring: National 4 or 5 in relevant subjects (English, Maths, or technical subjects preferred) No previous experience required Strong interest in vehicle mechanics essential Willingness to learn Attention to detail Ability to work effectively in a team Good communication skills Basic understanding of tools and mechanical principles Good manual dexterity Problem-solving ability Why Join Sodexo?
