Head of Engineering / Chief Engineer
Food Manufacturing - Bedfordshire
Rate: £600-£700 per day
Our client, a leading player in the food manufacturing sector, is seeking an experienced Head of Engineering / Chief Engineer to lead and transform their engineering function during a critical phase of development. This is a high-impact leadership role, offering the opportunity to shape strategy, elevate standards, and build a best-in-class engineering department.
The Role
This role will initially involve a consultation period of 8-12 weeks, during which you will:
·Conduct a full assessment of all site assets - reviewing condition, performance history, and future requirements.
·Review the capability, structure, and effectiveness of the engineering team, both collectively and individually.
·Deliver a transparent, board-level overview of the engineering function, its current trajectory, and future needs.
·Develop robust communication channels, processes, and ways of working to strengthen departmental effectiveness.
·Provide clear, actionable recommendations to improve asset care, team performance, and long-term engineering strategy.
Following this initial consultation, there is the potential to extend into a 6-month operational/management role, taking direct responsibility for implementing recommendations and supporting the business in embedding a culture of continuous improvement.
About You
We are looking for an engineering leader with a proven track record in food manufacturing or a similar high-compliance environment. You will bring:
·Significant senior leadership experience in engineering management (Head of Engineering, Chief Engineer, or equivalent).
·Strong technical and operational knowledge of modern food manufacturing environments.
·The ability to analyse complex engineering and operational challenges, and translate findings into clear board-level reporting.
·Excellent people leadership and communication skills - able to inspire, mentor, and drive performance across multi-skilled teams.
·A results-driven, strategic mindset, with the ability to execute hands-on change where required.
