You’ll be steering multiple cycles end to end – weekly, monthly, and a couple that seem to exist purely to keep things interesting. High volume, fast turnaround, and the occasional moment where someone swears blind they did send that timesheet… even though it’s nowhere to be found.
If you’re the type who quietly thrives on bringing order to other people’s chaos, you’ll do well here.
You’ll need to actually understand payroll. Not just where to click, but why numbers move the way they do. How to deal with odd tax code updates, holiday pay that makes no mathematical sense, or a new starter who joins, resigns, and reappears as a temp in the same month.
What you’ll be doing
* Managing multiple payroll cycles with accuracy and minimal drama.
* Handling starters, leavers, and those head‑scratching amendments that always arrive late.
* Verifying data before each run and troubleshooting anything that doesn’t add up.
* Sorting PAYE, NI, pensions, SSP, SMP, and all the HMRC bits that keep everything compliant.
* Producing payroll reports and explaining variances in a way humans can understand.
* Working with finance to keep the numbers aligned and the month‑end smooth.
* Staying on top of legislative changes so nothing catches you out.
* Spotting process improvements that actually make sense.
What you’ll need
* Strong end‑to‑end payroll experience across high‑volume environments.
* Confidence dealing with multi‑cycle deadlines without breaking a sweat.
* A forensic eye for detail and a stubborn refusal to accept sloppy data.
* The ability to keep calm when things get noisy, confusing, or plain odd.
