Job Overview
Fal Ward is a clinical day case unit seeking an experienced Oncology nurse trained in chemotherapy. The role involves coordinating day‑to‑day running of the unit and providing education and leadership for junior staff.

* Location: Fal Ward / Chemo Day Case Unit, Derriford Hospital, Derriford Road, Plymouth, PL6 8DH, Devon
* Contract type & working pattern: Permanent, 37.5 hours per week (Full time). Options for job share and flexible working.
* Salary: £37,338 - £44,962 per annum, pro‑rata if part‑time.

Responsibilities
* Provide effective clinical and managerial leadership across oncology areas, including inpatients, day case and outpatients, in the absence of the Clinical Nurse Manager.
* Establish systems for a multi‑disciplinary, patient‑centred approach and demonstrate teaching and practical skills.
* Offer patient and carer support regarding treatment side effects, health promotion, neutropenic sepsis and hair loss.
* Practice advanced specialist skills: administer Cytotoxic & Immunotherapies, blood products, central venous and peripheral access device care, venepuncture and cannulation.
* Assess patients prior to treatment and refer appropriately.
* Assess supportive, palliative and psychological needs of patients and carers, referring to suitable professionals.
* Within nurse‑led clinics assess suitability for initial referral and treatment (e.g., chemotherapy, immunotherapy, supportive therapies).
* Collaborate with colleagues to ensure timely, high‑quality information for patients, carers and staff.
* Plan, implement, carry out and evaluate care provided by self and other nursing staff.
* Maintain accurate clinical observations and records, interpret significance, and implement appropriate care.
* Make clinical decisions based on complex facts (vital signs, fluid balance) in daily and crisis situations.
* Maintain clinical competence by working at least 80% of the week clinically, undertaking training and staying current with practice changes.
* Act as a clinical resource, providing advice, support and supervision to unit staff and health‑care professionals.
* Be visible and accessible to patients, visitors and service users, promoting the role of Senior Sister.
Qualifications
Essential Criteria
* First‑level NMC registered nurse specialist with proven clinical knowledge across SACT administration, underpinned by theory and CPD.
* UKONS passport and in‑house SACT training completed.
Desirable Criteria
* Experience of leading clinical teams.
* Teaching/mentoring/assessment experience or qualification.
* Degree‑level post‑registration qualification or equivalent in Oncology.
Person Specification
Knowledge & Experience – Essential Criteria
* Delivery of SACT.
* Co‑ordination of daily clinical and educational requirements as defined by the Clinical Nurse Manager.
Desirable Criteria
* Demonstrable experience of managing complaints and conflict resolution.
* Ability to apply research findings and support evidence‑based practice.
* Demonstrable experience of research processes.
