We're on the lookout for friendly and enthusiastic café workers to join our small team, working alongside dedicated volunteers in our community-focused café. Based in the heart of our vibrant community centre, this role offers flexibility and the chance to make a meaningful impact by serving great food and helping to foster community wellbeing and connection every day.
What You'll Do:
· Prepare and serve food and drinks (e.g. teas, coffees, cakes, light meals)
· Maintain a clean and welcoming café space (wipe tables, wash up, restock supplies)
· Welcome and serve customers with friendly, attentive service
· Handle cash and card payments using the till or point-of-sale system
· Work alongside volunteers to support a team-focused environment
· Follow food hygiene and safety guidelines
· Support community events or activities happening in the centre
· Contribute ideas to improve menus, service, or the café atmosphere

Job Title: Cafe Worker, Malvern Cube
Salary: £12.21 per hour. Subject to training and if requested on occasion you may be required to occasionally act as Shift Lead (see summary sheet attached) at a rate of £13.10 per hour.
Contract Type: This is a zero-hours contract, with the potential to transition to a variable-hours contract in the future.
Location: Malvern Cube, WR14. The Garden Café is a community café at Malvern Cube Community & Arts Centre, open to the public from 10am - 3pm Monday to Thursday and 10am – 2pm Friday, and can provide catering with a licensed bar for evening and weekend events.
Reports to: Cafe Manager
Part-time position: Hours are generally between 10am – 4pm predominately on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with additional shifts occasionally available to cover holidays and sickness. There may also be occasional weekend or evening hours to support events.
Purpose of Job: To support the Café Manager with the smooth operation day to day of the café, creating an atmosphere that is welcoming to all members of the community and providing a professional, consistent and friendly service. Back of house duties include preparing / cooking healthy meals, preparing lunches for orders, baking cakes and dishwashing. Front of house duties include taking orders, operating the till, operating a coffee machine and cleaning tables. You will be required to rotate between these roles as and when required, training will be provided.
Key Responsibilities and accountabilities:
1. Service Delivery
* To ensure a warm, welcoming, clean and safe environment at all times for all customers, volunteers and staff
* To maintain a high level of friendly and efficient service to customers
* To undertake when required both back and front of house duties
* To be knowledgeable about current Food legislation and Health and Safety issues.
* To assist in ensuring the kitchen and cafe areas are clean, hygienic and meet all health and safety requirements consistently throughout the day
2. Working within a Team
* To be able to work within a team including volunteers in a busy environment with peaks and troughs.
* Whilst we endeavour to maintain a consistent staffing rota, this role requires flexibility to cover periods of holiday and sickness.
* To work within a team to action all tasks on daily checklists
3. Financial Responsibilities
* To manage customer payments via a till and card reader.
4. Other Duties:
* To organise and attend any training as required
* Be aware of, and at all times act within, all policies and procedures for Malvern Cube
On occasion, and following successful in-house training, you may be asked to take on the role of Shift Lead in the Café Manager's absence.
The additional duties required within this role include:
· Be the first to arrive, opening up the café (e.g. setting up the till, preparing equipment, and laying out cakes)
· Check off and store deliveries safely and correctly
· Review the daily diary for any updates, staff notes, or group bookings
· Check sell-by dates on all food items and stock
· Complete required health and safety documentation, including:
o Fridge/freezer temperature checks
o Opening and closing checks
o "Prove it" sheet in the Food Health & Safety File
o Allergen file updated with current food offerings
o Follow and work through the daily checklist, ensuring all tasks are completed and delegated appropriately
o Oversee and support the café team, ensuring everyone knows their role and focus area (e.g. drinks, front of house, food prep) based on the café's needs
· Ensure all team members receive their breaks and take your own break last
· At closing:
o Complete end-of-day till report
o Lock down and turn off all equipment
o Follow the end-of-day cleaning checklist, including mopping the floor
· On Fridays: ensure fridges are cleared and that any food needing refrigeration or freezing is stored appropriately
· Complete a waste sheet for any discarded or unsold items
· Act as the initial point of contact for any café-related complaints or issues
· Be the last to leave, ensuring the café is secure and clean

Essential Skills
Excellent cooking and baking skills
Ability to work quickly, whilst remaining welcoming and friendly to customers
Ability to working collaboratively
Ability to ensure every customer feels welcome, including those who may have additional needs
Willingness to involve and support volunteers as appropriate
Desirable Skills
Barista Experience
Desirable Knowledge
Current Food Safety and Hygiene qualification, Level 2 or above
Understanding of Safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults
Knowledge of Health and Safety, COSHH and RIDDOR legislation
Up to date First Aid qualification
Desirable Experience
Previous experience in hospitality or catering (minimum 1 year)
