We are looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our Great Yarmouth Engineering Team. The role will play a key role in designing and optimising precision tooling that enables the manufacture of advanced microelectronic components for aerospace and defence applications. Operating within a clean‑room environment, the role focuses on developing high‑repeatability jigs, fixtures, and laser‑processing tooling that enhance assembly accuracy, boost production throughput, and ensure consistent product quality. Working closely with Design Engineering, Production, and Process teams, the engineer will deliver robust tooling solutions that directly support mission‑critical products. Key Responsibilities Create high‑quality conceptual and detailed designs for jigs, fixtures, nests, alignment systems, and handling tools used in microelectronic assembly and test. Use SolidWorks, Creo, or similar CAD tools to produce 3D models, assemblies, simulations, and fully defined technical drawings. Develop tooling compatible with clean‑room operations, selecting ESD‑safe, low‑contamination materials to meet aerospace and defence standards. Design specialised tooling for laser processing, including precision alignment, clamping, thermal management, and optical/beam access optimisation. Partner with Production Engineering to diagnose process bottlenecks and implement tooling improvements that enhance repeatability, throughput, and yield. Collaborate with Electronics and Design Engineers to ensure tooling meets tight tolerances and supports functional product requirements. Support first‑article builds, process verification, and production troubleshooting, ensuring tooling performance aligns with manufacturing needs. Define manufacturing requirements for machined components, 3D‑printed parts, and laser‑cut/etched features, ensuring high-quality supplier output. Work with Procurement and external suppliers to deliver compliant, cost‑effective tooling solutions, reviewing prototypes and first-off parts. Required Qualifications & Experience Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline. Demonstrable experience designing precision tooling, jigs, or fixtures, ideally within electronics, micro‑assembly, or aerospace/defence manufacturing. Strong proficiency with SolidWorks, Creo, or comparable 3D CAD systems, including the creation of detailed drawing packs. Sound understanding of: Precision machining and manufacturing principles Materials suitable for clean‑room and ESD‑controlled environments Laser processing constraints (fixturing, alignment, thermal considerations) Experience working collaboratively with cross‑functional engineering, production, and quality teams. Knowledge of vacuum systems, optical assembly, or micro‑mechanical integration is advantageous. Familiarity with automated or semi‑automated tooling design. Experience performing basic FEA (static and/or thermal) analysis. Understanding of ESD controls and aerospace product compliance expectations. Skills & Competencies Strong problem‑solving ability with a practical and innovative approach to design. Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced environment with shifting priorities. Excellent communication skills, capable of translating production challenges into engineered solutions. High attention to detail, with a commitment to documentation accuracy and design quality. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate across multi‑disciplinary teams. Structured, analytical mindset with a focus on manufacturability and continuous improvement. Other Requirements Must hold, or be eligible to obtain, Security Check (SC) clearance Occasional travel may be required for supplier visits, technical reviews, or cross-site collaboration.
