Were looking for a strategic, forward-thinking legal leader to head up our People Division within Legal Services. This is a high-impact role where youll guide a team of talented lawyers working across Adult Social Care, Childrens Services, Education, and Litigation, helping to deliver legal solutions that support the Councils priorities and make a real difference to our communities.
What Youll Be Doing Lead and manage the People Team, ensuring high-quality, efficient legal services are delivered across complex and sensitive areas.
Provide expert legal advice to senior officers, elected Members, and external partners, helping shape policy and decision-making.
Build strong, trusted relationships with Directors and senior leaders to understand their goals and challenges, offering proactive legal support and strategic insight.
Oversee the most complex legal cases, ensuring robust, compliant, and innovative solutions.
Drive performance and continuous improvement, ensuring the team meets financial targets and maintains high standards.
Represent Legal Services on internal and external working groups, contributing to cross-council initiatives and partnerships.
Authorise the use of external legal counsel where needed, ensuring value and quality.
Champion a positive team culture, aligned with the Councils values, and support staff development and wellbeing.
What Were Looking For A qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of CILEX (England & Wales).
Extensive experience in Social Care law and/or Litigation, ideally within a local authority setting.
Proven leadership skills with the ability to inspire, manage and develop a high-performing legal team.
Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with a track record of delivering creative legal solutions.
Excellent communication and influencing skills, especially at senior and political levels.
Financial acumen and experience managing budgets and performance targets.
Deep understanding of local government law and the wider public sector landscape.
