Being a Medical Examiner is interesting, involving and actively engages new learning every day.
It also gives you the opportunity and time to explain to the bereaved the cause of death of their loved one, but also what occurred, why, what led to it. This offers them great relief often.
We also have the opportunity to observe areas where improvements can be made and to raise these to the relevant departments.

Responsibilities & Duties
* 4 hours a week during which the ME will scrutinise hospital and community deaths that are referred in.
* Concluding the cause of death and formulating an MCCD with the Qualified Attending Practitioner.
* Communicating with the bereaved, a role shared with the Medical Examiner Officers.
* Observing areas where improvements can be made and raising these to the relevant departments.
Qualifications
* MEs must be experienced NHS clinicians, qualified for at least 5 years.
* They also need to have completed the RCPath ME training, which involves online training and face-to-face training. These are easily accessible through the RCPath website.
