Job Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us. Please see below for detailed job description of the role. Main duties of the job:

As a Trainee Clinical Scientist in Histopathology at UHS, you will play a key role in supporting high quality diagnostic services while progressing through the National School of Healthcare Science (NSHCS) Scientist Training Programme (STP) in Histology. This three‑year programme combines workplace based learning with a master’s degree, enabling you to develop the scientific, clinical and professional skills required for future registration as a Clinical Scientist. As stated in the job description, you will learn how to perform and interpret clinical and specialist scientific processes underpinned by theoretical and applied knowledge and practical experience.

You will join a large, tertiary Cellular Pathology department that forms part of the Southern Counties Pathology network and delivers a busy Mon–Sat, 7am–7pm clinical service. The department provides local and regional specialist services across histopathology, neuropathology, diagnostic cytopathology, research histology, mortuary services and biomedical imaging. It also works closely with molecular pathology and genomics partners as part of the Central and South Genomic Hub and actively promotes scientist led specimen dissection and digital pathology innovation, including participation in the national PathLake programme.

Your work will directly contribute to safe, effective and patient centred care. Trainees are expected to carry out complex scientific and clinical roles, analyse, interpret and compare investigative and clinical option and initiate and undertake innovation, improvement and R&D. Through this, you will support the department’s commitment to high standards of quality, safety, and continuous improvement.

You will work closely with the Designated Training Officer, Senior Scientists, and multidisciplinary colleagues across the department. The role involves regular collaboration with technical and scientific staff, other trainee healthcare scientists, and external training providers. As outlined in the job description, trainees will work in specified areas of the department and be responsible to the Designated Training Officer for their own work and progression through the scheme.
