Vacancy Description
As our apprentice, you will receive detailed instruction, information, and training pivotal to the successful implementation of technical support within an education and research setting. From dynamic spaces, research institutes, to elaborate laboratory areas across the entire university, you will play a key part in supporting the Nuclear provision across our Science and Engineering department.
The Nuclear Laboratory Scientist is expected to support our experimental facilities to ensure they run efficiently in response to research and teaching needs. They will work closely with academic staff, researchers, and technical staff involved in research projects and taught modules.
Day-to-day duties include, but are not limited to:
* Perform experiments using various equipment and support staff, students, and visitors
* Prepare solutions, samples, and standards for analysis and experimentation
* Operate gloveboxes, TGA, liquid scintillation counters, UV-Vis spectrophotometry, FTIR spectroscopy, particle size analysis, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, and rheometry
* Maintain, clean, and service equipment, including routine inspections, calibration, and repairs
* Uphold health and safety standards
* Provide technical support in nuclear laboratories and research activities
* Keep records of radioactive and hazardous materials as per legislation, and maintain servicing records
* Write risk assessments, COSHH assessments, and SOPs
* Contribute to LEAF accreditation processes

Training to be Provided
Alongside your Level 6 apprenticeship qualification, you will undertake a five-year program with certified qualifications including an Honours Degree in Chemistry, IOSH, COSHH, Cryogenics, Gas Cylinder Safety, Laser Safety, and more.
The training is broad initially, covering various technical skills to support research, teaching, and infrastructure. You will work with specialists and attend university to complete your degree, with all necessary equipment, uniforms, and training provided.
