About the role

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to take charge of all our Fleet Engineering activities, ensuring the safety, reliability, and performance of our fleets. This critical role will lead the Fleet Technical Services Fleet Engineering team, driving the efficiency and effectiveness of vehicle maintenance approach, delivering expert technical support to our production teams and 3rd party maintenance providers alike, and identifying and implementing vehicle improvements that enhance safety, reduce costs, and improve maintainability.

Key responsibilities include:

1. Line management of the Fleet Engineering team
2. Own all Fleet Engineering activities and vehicle maintenance documentation
3. Ensure EMR’s fleets meet safety, reliability, availability, and customer performance standards
4. Provide professional engineering support to EMR Production via effective maintenance documentation
5. Ensure compliance with all standards and regulatory requirements
6. Lead and manage engineering elements of fleet projects through the Engineering Change process
7. Plan long-term resource requirements to support strategic engineering changes
8. Support the introduction of Class 810 units into day-to-day operation
9. Promote and implement innovation across the Fleet Function, integrating best practices and digital solutions
10. Deputise for the Head of Fleet Technical Services and Professional Head of Engineering when required

About you

We’re seeking a forward-thinking engineering leader with a strong technical background and proven leadership capability. The ideal candidate will have:

11. Chartered Engineer status (Electrical or Mechanical)
12. Strong knowledge of railway standards, legislation, and regulatory requirements
13. Extensive experience with railway traction and rolling stock systems
14. A track record of success in senior leadership roles within technical or operational environments
15. The ability to lead, inspire and motivate large teams with clarity and purpose
16. Excellent communication skills – written, verbal, and numerical
17. Strong influencing skills, capable of engaging effectively at all levels, both internally and externally
18. Analytical thinking with the ability to interpret data and apply the right corrective actions

This position is based in Derby, but we've adopted a flexible hybrid working model that creates the opportunity to work in your own way at home but also provides great spaces for in-person collaboration.
