This is a training and development role with a clear path to becoming a qualified rail driver, including a comprehensive training programme and a career path with growth opportunities.
Purpose of the Role
To undertake the safe and efficient driving and operation of trains as directed on weekly roster and diagrams. You will join a dynamic Grinder/Miller team with a focus on safety; prior experience is not required—just a hardworking attitude and commitment to safety. Your journey will begin with the training programme to become a qualified rail driver.
Person Specification
Essential
* UK mobile and flexible—able to work weekends, bank holidays and a mixture of days and nights as part of a 24/7 shift-based roster.
* Willingness to stay away from home (at company expense) when required.
* Computer skills in Microsoft Word and Outlook.
* Full UK Driving Licence.
* Psychometric pass (as part of recruitment and a necessary requirement for all train drivers).
* Ability to follow processes and procedures safely without direct supervision.
* Positive attitude and ability to thrive in a busy, pressurised environment.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Motivated to learn and contribute to the business.
* Ideally previous rail industry experience or existing PTS certification.
Key Responsibilities
* Be committed to becoming a qualified mainline rail driver through Colas Rail’s Driver Training Programme.
* Drive and operate machines/trains safely and professionally.
* Follow all operational rules, safety procedures, and regulations.
* Demonstrate clear and professional communication at all times.
* Provide accurate reports in a timely manner to help maintain a safe railway.
* Work towards an individual competency plan regarding routes and tractions and maintain all competencies.
* Be prepared for organisational changes and meet operational requirements.
* Any other reasonable duties as required from time to time.
