Overview
Software Developer - Met Office - HEO role at Manchester Digital. Location: Exeter, South West England, EX1 3PB. This is a full-time position offering hybrid working (part in the office, part from home) with flexible patterns to suit the team. The opportunity is to develop world-leading meteorological data platforms using modern cloud-based technologies.
World-changing work: the Met Office provides weather and climate data to users across the UK and beyond. Our Data Services team builds scalable cloud-based solutions and APIs to deliver fast, reliable forecast and observation data to emergency responders, government, businesses and the public.
Responsibilities
* Join the Met Office’s Data Services team to develop scalable cloud-based solutions that deliver critical weather and climate data.
* Engineer solutions using Python, Java and AWS Cloud Computing to bridge advanced scientific modelling with user-facing platforms.
* Work with the output of cutting-edge supercomputing capabilities, handling large data volumes and focusing on performance, scalability and reliability.
* Contribute to the design, development, deployment and maintenance of cloud-native services and APIs.
* Collaborate across teams to ensure high-quality delivery and alignment with government data profession capabilities.
Qualifications
* Essential Skills & Abilities
* Systems Design: translate designs into physical implementations, document work to required standards, manage risk and complexity.
* Development process optimisation: understand and improve development processes and identify deficiencies.
* Programming and build: collaborate to design, code, test and document programs of medium-to-high complexity using appropriate standards and tools.
* Service support: fault fixing and maintenance on infrastructure following agreed procedures.
* Systems integration: build and test interfaces between systems; participate in broader integration work.
Benefits
* Salary of £33,794 plus Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme contributions (£9,790 contribution expected).
* Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) of £2,200 per annum as a market supplement (April 2024 – March 2026).
* Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days after 5 years, with option to buy/sell up to 5 days per year.
* Total reward package up to £49,806 annually including base pay, pension, and allowances.
* Support for learning: up to half a day per week for non-project skills development.
