Job Description
The Group SHEQ Director is responsible for leading and harmonising Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) strategies across the organisation. This role ensures robust governance, compliance, and continuous improvement in SHEQ performance, while aligning with business objectives and regulatory requirements. The SHEQ Director will oversee key external partnerships, drive audit and risk alignment, and foster a resilient safety culture throughout the Group.
Key accountabilities:
1. Strategic Leadership & Governance - provide direction for SHEQ strategy, standardise reporting, and deliver insights to the Executive Leadership team, and operational teams.
2. Contract & System Oversight - manage key external relationships including safety software, occupational health, testing providers, and regulatory bodies.
3. Audit & Risk Alignment - develop and implement a unified internal audit framework to enhance risk visibility and control across the Group.
4. Policy & Compliance – oversee and maintain a consistent suite of SHEQ policies and ensure legal and regulatory compliance across all operations.
5. Risk Management - oversee retained risk, insurance claims, and defensibility frameworks. Monitor road risk through structured BU level project plans and lead initiatives to reduce these.
6. Environmental Management – lead the implementation and maintenance of an externally certified ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. Ensure central accountability for core processes including audit, contractor control, and policy management.
7. Behavioural Safety & Culture - champion active colleague engagement and behavioural safety initiatives, embedding a safety culture of continuous improvement to build resilience and ownership.
Qualifications
Applicants will need to have / demonstrate the following:
8. Significant experience in a similar SHEQ leadership role, ideally in a warehouse, logistics and transport operations.
9. In-depth understanding of SHEQ legislation and regulatory frameworks relevant to warehousing, logistics, and transport operations.
10. Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science or related field.
11. NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent (essential).
12. Experience with regulatory bodies e.g. HSE, DVSA and also external audits.
13. Track record if implementing and driving behavioural safety principles and cultural change methodologies.
14. Experience managing multi-site operations and aligning diverse business units under a unified SHEQ strategy.
