Job Description
Senior Occupational Health Advisor – Temporary (12 months) – Location: Escafeld House, Sheffield – Salary: £44,700‑£49,716 – 37 hours per week. Lead a small multidisciplinary team to deliver OH services to South Yorkshire Police, including attendance management, pre‑placement assessments, fitness for work medicals, vaccinations, contamination incident management, physiotherapy and other required services.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and manage a small multidisciplinary team of clinicians, developing, motivating and engaging the team to deliver a high standard of OH practice and customer service.
* Conduct PDRs, address staff development needs, support welfare and ensure adherence to health and safety procedures.
* Act as the first point of escalation for clinical team and client queries.
* Ensure all relevant duties for a safe and effective clinic environment, such as replenishment of consumables, maintaining vaccination stocks, fridge checks and equipment calibration.
* Support telephone consultations and maintain clinical objectivity and impartiality.
* Provide evidence‑based occupational health advice to employees and management.
* Provide concise reports indicating an employee’s fitness to work and detail any advice or adjustments.
* Use a bio‑psychosocial and functional assessment approach to address work barriers and inform recommendations.
* Work with a multidisciplinary team, managing referrals so each client receives the required expertise.
* Liaise with the Clinical Governance Manager, physician, physiotherapist and counsellors to produce robust occupational health reports, using organisational policies to support return‑to‑work plans.
* Interpret legislation, policies and procedures to meet South Yorkshire Police occupational health requirements.
* Deliver services that comply with confidentiality and professional codes.
* Assist the Clinical Governance Manager with policy review and improvements.
* Support pre‑employment and mandatory medicals, advising on fitness and adjustments for managers, ensuring timely completion.
* Set up, manage and deliver health surveillance programmes, demonstrating competency in required tests (spirometry, audiometry etc.).
* Undertake vaccination programmes and advise on infection control.
* Handle contamination incidents sensitively and effectively.
* Understand and apply health and safety regulations, escalating concerning cases when necessary.
* Maintain accurate occupational health records in the eOPAS database.
* Deliver health promotion activities in line with the Wellbeing Strategy.
* Provide individual advice on health and wellbeing, signposting to external agencies.
* Participate in regular peer clinical audit to generate continuous quality improvements.
* Prioritise work with effective time management to meet KPIs.
Skills and Experience
* Professionally qualified in Occupational Health Nursing (degree, diploma, postgraduate qualification) with substantial practical experience in the health sector.
* Previous experience leading professional staff and optimising performance.
* Case‑management experience and understanding of health and wellbeing issues in policing.
* Experience delivering immunisations, venepuncture, audiometry and spirometry.
* Ability to manage a challenging workload and support future OH plans.
* Understanding and application of professional regulatory frameworks relevant to SYP occupational health services.
* Passion for high standards of client care.
* Excellent communication, influencing, and relationship‑management skills.
* Excellent report‑writing skills.
* Ability to manage a small team of professional clinicians.
* Ability to conduct medical assessments and deliver vaccinations.
* Ability to travel within South Yorkshire Police.
