Overview
Our client, a fast-growing global professional services business, provides corporate, fiduciary, and regulatory services to leading private equity firms, hedge funds, CLO managers, trusts, and global financial institutions. With offices across multiple international hubs, the organisation combines global expertise with practical, client-focused solutions.
They are seeking a qualified lawyer to join the in-house legal team as Data Protection Officer (Lawyer). The role will be the primary point of contact for data protection matters, supporting governance, regulatory compliance, and the safeguarding of personal data across all jurisdictions where the business operates. The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of Legal and senior stakeholders, providing expert advice and ensuring robust compliance frameworks are applied.
Key Responsibilities
* Act as the primary contact for all data protection matters across the business.
* Monitor compliance with GDPR and other applicable international data protection laws
* Support the design, maintenance, and enforcement of data protection and information security policies, procedures, and privacy statements.
* Advise on Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), mitigation strategies, and remediation measures.
* Collaborate with IT and business teams on access controls, security measures, and data governance.
* Deliver training sessions to promote a culture of privacy and data security across the organisation.
* Manage Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs) and ensure timely and compliant responses.
* Uphold data subject rights, including access, rectification, and erasure.
* Serve as primary contact for supervisory authorities and internal stakeholders regarding data protection matters.
* Provide guidance to clients on the organisation’s role as data controller or processor.
* Assist with reviewing, drafting, and maintaining client engagement, corporate governance, and compliance documentation, including policies, manuals, templates, and internal communications.
* Support legal proceedings, regulatory inspections, and interactions with authorities as required.
* Undertake other legal, risk management, or data protection-related tasks as directed.
Education & Experience
* Qualified lawyer with a minimum of 6 years PQE, with specialist experience in data protection and privacy compliance
* Professional certifications such as CIPP/E, CIPM, or equivalent desired
* Proven experience working with global data protection frameworks, ideally within financial services.
* Strong knowledge of GDPR and other international data protection regulations
* Familiarity with information security principles, risk management, and data governance tools
* Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and influencing skills.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with keen attention to detail
* Commercial mindset with experience advising senior management and supporting strategic decisions.
* Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and operate in a fast-paced environment.
