This Graduate Learning Support Assistant role is ideal for an aspiring psychologist seeking hands-on experience within a mainstream primary school in Slough. A Learning Support Assistant role within a mainstream primary school offers the opportunity to:
1. Support autistic pupils on a one-to-one and small-group basis, helping them access the curriculum and wider school life
2. Develop a strong understanding of autism within a mainstream education context, including inclusion and differentiated learning
3. Learn and apply strategies such as visual supports, clear routines, sensory regulation techniques, and communication scaffolding
4. Observe psychological and behavioural principles in practice, including emotional regulation, behaviour support, and attachment-aware approaches
5. Work collaboratively with class teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals to support pupil progress
6. Build essential transferable skills including observation, data collection, relationship-building, reflective practice, and professional communication
7. Make a positive impact on pupils’ confidence, independence, wellbeing, and engagement with learning
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
8. A strong academic background in psychology or a related discipline, with a clear interest in autism and child development
9. Experience supporting children in schools, care, or community settings (desirable but not essential)
10. A patient, empathetic, and calm approach when supporting pupils with additional needs in a busy classroom environment
11. Strong communication skills and the ability to build trusting relationships with children who may experience social or communication challenges
12. A genuine commitment to inclusion and supporting children to thrive in mainstream education
13. A proactive, reflective attitude and willingness to learn from experienced education professionals
