Overview
The role of a Health Care Assistant in Mental Health Care is to provide care for patients during mental health crises, including individuals with histories of trauma, psychological challenges, and neurodiversity. You will work alongside secondary mental health services, primary care services, and charitable organisations. You may be required to travel to patient locations using your own car or a Mental Health Response Vehicle for assessments. You will work in places such as the Place of Safety Assessment Unit under relevant Mental Health Act provisions, supporting patients and escalating concerns to Mental Health Practitioners as needed.
We are a nursing-led service delivering a 24/7 365-day service across our Mental Health Urgent Care Hub (MHUCH), Mental Health Response Vehicle (MHRV) and Place of Safety Unit (PSAU).
Responsibilities
* Take referrals via telephone from professional referral services and assess patient needs.
* Record patients’ vital signs and escalate any concerns to Mental Health Practitioners.
* Support patients experiencing psychological and emotional distress in a therapeutic environment.
* Attend to patients at the Place of Safety Assessment Unit as required under relevant Mental Health Act provisions (Section 136 and/or S135 (1) of the Mental Health Act 1983).
* Drive to patient locations (using your own car or the Mental Health Response Vehicle) for mental health crisis assessments.
* Support opportunities to upskill in Electrocardiograph (ECG) and Venepuncture training.
* Collaborate with colleagues across Mental Health Urgent Care Hub, Mental Health Response Vehicle and Place of Safety Unit to provide coordinated care.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Experience or willingness to work in urgent mental health care settings and with people in crisis.
* Ability to work with patients who have diverse needs, including trauma histories and neurodiversity.
* Willingness to drive to patient locations and participate in out-of-hours and shift-based work as part of a 24/7 service.
* Openness to upskilling in ECG and Venepuncture training as part of professional development.
* Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team and communicate clearly with patients and professionals.
