Overview
Senior Clinical Engineer role at Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The post is part of the Clinical Engineering service that may transfer to an NHS wholly owned subsidiary; the proposed date of transfer is October 2025. The subsidiary will continue to offer NHS Agenda for Change Terms and Conditions to current employees who transfer and to new employees recruited after that date. This is a full-time, permanent position at Band 6.
Location: Dorset County Hospital, Williams Avenue, Dorchester, DT1 2JY. Salary: £38,682 to £46,580 per year. Job references and related details are provided in the job posting.
Responsibilities
* Participate in strategic decision making around medical device replacement within the capital programme.
* Independently undertake commissioning checks, calibration and maintenance of new devices and equipment (e.g., syringe pumps, diathermy machines, ventilators, anaesthetic machines and defibrillators).
* Demonstrate new equipment to clinical staff and update service records accordingly.
* Lead in medical device connectivity as technology advances (e.g., integration with new EHR system planned for 2028).
* Supervise Clinical Engineers, trainee Clinical Technologists and Equipment Library Technicians when required.
* Undertake repair, maintenance and repair of high-value electronic and mechanical devices; advise end users on acquisition, safe use and disposal of medical devices in line with MHRA regulations.
* Order parts and accessories; monitor and rotate stock levels to minimise wastage; review working practices and suggest efficiency improvements.
Essential Qualifications
* BEng / BSc / HND / HNC in Electronics or Engineering or an equivalent combination of qualifications and experience.
* Evidence of regular participation in relevant technical training courses and seminars.
Desirable Qualifications
* Professional Registration with IPEM and/or RCT.
Knowledge and Experience (Essential)
* Extensive experience in repairing, maintaining and performing checks on a range of complex specialist medical devices (e.g., infusion/syringe pumps, diathermy machines, ventilators, anaesthesia machines, defibrillators, patient monitoring).
* Experience with medical device databases and a range of test & measuring equipment; practical experience in engineering workshop practices.
* Experience working in a clinical environment with emphasis on patient safety, dignity and infection prevention.
* Experience with networked medical devices (wired and Wi-Fi); knowledge of MHRA regulations for managing medical devices; familiarity with Quality Management Systems.
* Experience supervising and developing junior staff; ability to work within health and safety legislation.
Skills and Abilities (Essential)
* Ability to operate equipment safely and effectively; strong fault diagnosis capabilities.
* Advanced electronic and mechanical engineering skills; proficient in use of test & measuring equipment and technical manuals.
* Strong IT skills (MS Office, and ability to interrogate complex databases such as F2 or e-Quip).
* Good organisational, prioritisation and time management skills; effective written and verbal communication; ability to supervise and support junior staff and trainees.
* Good customer relations and interpersonal skills; ability to negotiate with clinical and management staff on equipment management issues.
* Full UK driving licence and own transport; good physical fitness and dexterity to perform duties; willingness to work outside core hours in emergencies; willingness to develop skills through training.
* Willingness to join IPEM/RCT professional membership within probation; adaptability to evolving systems and values of the Trust.
