General Practice Assistants (GPAs) form part of amulti-disciplinary team within primary care and support the clinicians in thesmooth running of the surgery by handling routine administration and some basicclinical duties enabling the clinician to focus on the patient. Ultimately theaim is to improve the patients access/experience in practice.

Our GPAs will provideadministrative and clinical support to our surgery staff, enabling them to makethe best use of consultation time, as part of a multi-disciplinary,primary-care team, contributing to the smooth running of our GP Practices.General Practice Assistants will operate under the supervision of GPs and attimes other appropriately qualified clinicians. The assistant will undertake atraining programme, if not already accredited
Main duties of the job
Duties may encompass the following duties:
Supporting with both the review & the recall system for Long TermCondition reviews
Supporting clinicians with undertaking basic clinical activity prior toplanned clinics
Creating & maintaining personalised & patient centred care plans
Sorting, prioritising & signposting incoming clinicalcorrespondence, extracting required information & applying medical codes topatient records. This will include scanning clinical and administrative letters into theclinical system.
Summarising patient records, extracting required information &applying medical codes to digitised notes
Arranging appropriate referrals both internally or externally,signposting patients, arranging tests & follow up appointments
Supporting clinicians with administrative tasks.
Complete basic (non-opinion) forms & core elements of some forms forthe GP to approve & sign.
Help the GP liaise with externalagencies (such as arranging admissions so the GP can continue with theirconsultations)

Job responsibilities
Thefollowing are the core responsibilities of the GPA. There may be, on occasion,a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factorssuch as workload and staffing levels. You will work within your capabilitiesand:
Sortingof clinical post and prioritising, directly dealing with all routine clinicalpost.
Extractinginformation from clinical letters that need coding supporting with clinicalcoding and summarising protocols.
Preparingpatients, explaining treatment procedures to patients, including arrangingfollow up appointments, taking a brief history and basic readings in readinessfor the GP appointment
Arrangereferrals on behalf of the clinician both internally (to other clinicians orcare coordinators/social prescribers/health and wellbeing coaches) orexternally (to the hospital or community clinics)
Supportingclinicians with administrative tasks, input to the clinical computer system andassisting the clinician in a variety of clinics.
Completesimple clinical observations/investigations as directed, such as dipstickurine, taking blood pressure, ECGs, phlebotomy etc.
Completebasic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approveand sign (such as insurance forms, mortgage, benefits agency forms etc.)
Help theGP liaise with external agencies (such as arranging admissions so the GP cancontinue with their consultations)
Supportingwith QOF reviews
Supportingthe recall system for Long Term Condition reviews
Promotecomfort and well-being by ensuring that patients personal and social needs aremet and be able to care for a patients nursing needs.

During the initial stage of your employment, your role will primarily involve administrative tasks, including scanning, coding, and managing long-term condition recalls.
