About Central Functions

Central Functions is formed of the teams and people that serve the entire business. These people are integral to the smooth running of the business; ensuring everyone is paid on time, that materials are sourced and arrive promptly, that we meet our legal obligations and that our health, safety, and security is safeguarded.

About Health, Safety & Environment and the Role

We are looking for an experienced Health, Safety and Environment Manager to provide competent, practical and proactive HSE support across our office and retail locations.

This role will play a key part in ensuring our workplaces and customer‑facing environments are safe, compliant and well managed for employees, contractors, customers and visitors. Working closely with site leaders, retail managers, facilities teams and the wider Group Health, Safety & Environment function, you will help embed consistent standards, manage risk effectively and support continual improvement across the portfolio.

Reporting functionally to the Group Head of Health, Safety and Environment, the HSE Manager will act as the main point of contact for HSE matters across assigned office and retail sites. The role requires someone who can build strong relationships, influence stakeholders and provide clear, commercially aware advice in a fast‑paced, multi‑site environment.

Responsibilities

* Act as the subject matter expert for health, safety and environmental matters across assigned office and retail locations.
* Work closely with site leadership, retail management, facilities teams and operational stakeholders to maintain high standards of HSE performance.
* Ensure Group HSE policies, procedures and standards are implemented consistently across all relevant sites.
* Support the development and delivery of HSE strategies, improvement plans and risk reduction initiatives.
* Monitor compliance with applicable health, safety and environmental legislation, ensuring risks are identified, managed and escalated where required.
* Lead and support HSE audits, inspections and compliance checks across office and retail locations.
* Ensure audit findings, corrective actions and improvement plans are tracked through to completion.
* Provide practical support and guidance on risk assessments, safe systems of work, workplace inspections and site‑specific HSE arrangements.
* Support contractor management processes, including contractor vetting, site controls, permits where required and safe working practices.
* Act as the main HSE contact for office and retail improvement projects, refurbishments, fit‑outs and facilities‑related works.
* Review and support emergency arrangements, including fire safety procedures, first aid provision, evacuation plans and emergency drills.
* Provide HSE advice on common office and retail risks, including slips, trips and falls, manual handling, display equipment, stockroom safety, deliveries, lone working and customer‑facing activities.
* Produce HSE performance data, trend analysis and management reports at agreed intervals.
* Lead or support incident reporting and investigations, ensuring root causes are identified and appropriate corrective and preventative actions are implemented.
* Maintain site compliance training matrices and identify relevant HSE training requirements.
* Coordinate or deliver HSE training and briefings that are practical, engaging and relevant to office and retail teams.
* Communicate HSE standards, expectations and responsibilities clearly to employees, contractors and site stakeholders.
* Support environmental compliance across office and retail locations, including waste management, environmental controls, sustainability initiatives and compliance with relevant environmental legislation.
* Promote a positive, proactive safety culture across all assigned locations.

What Skills and Experience Do I Need for This Role?

You will have:

* Strong working knowledge of UK health, safety and environmental legislation.
* Previous experience in an HSE management role, ideally within a multi‑site office, retail, facilities, property or customer‑facing environment.
* Experience supporting safe operations across both employee workplaces and customer‑facing locations.
* Strong auditing, inspection and incident investigation experience.
* The ability to identify risk, recommend practical solutions and drive actions through to completion.
* Experience working with site leaders, managers and operational teams to improve HSE standards.
* Good understanding of contractor management and facilities‑related risk.
* Experience supporting refurbishment, maintenance, fit‑out or site improvement projects from an HSE perspective.
* Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
* The confidence to challenge where required while maintaining positive working relationships.
* A proactive and hands‑on approach, with the ability to manage priorities across multiple locations.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

* NEBOSH Diploma, or working towards, or equivalent relevant qualification.
* IOSH membership, ideally Chartered status or working towards Chartered status.
* Strong understanding of risk assessment, safe systems of work, audit processes and legal compliance.
* Experience maintaining or supporting an occupational health and safety management system, ideally ISO 45001 or equivalent.
* Experience managing HSE requirements across multiple sites.
