About the role
Codan is seeking a senior legal professional to lead its Legal and Compliance function across the UK & Europe region. This strategic role is responsible for ensuring that all business activities within the UK and European region of the Codan Group comply with applicable legislation, regulatory requirements, and internal standards.
You will provide high-quality, commercially focused legal and compliance advice to regional business units, enabling sound decision-making and proactive risk management. The position includes leadership of the regional legal team, driving a culture of performance, accountability, and solution-oriented support. As a key member of the global legal leadership team, you will work closely with the Group General Counsel to support the development and execution of Codan’s global legal and compliance strategy.
Key responsibilities will include
* Lead the Legal & Compliance function across the associated region, aligning with Codan’s global legal and compliance strategy.
* Provide legal advice and support on all commercial contracts, risk related matters, M&A and strategic initiatives, and relevant regional regulatory matters.
* Manage a high-performing regional legal and commercial team and external counsel (as necessary).
* Oversee compliance programs, policies, and training across the region.
* Provide oversight and direction as it applies to government contracting, export controls, sanctions, and IP management.
* Advise senior leadership and regional business unit heads on legal risk, governance, and strategic initiatives.
* Ensure regional alignment with global legal and compliance frameworks.
About You
We are seeking a Senior Legal Counsel with at least 15 years’ post-qualification experience in a leading commercial law firm and/or as senior in-house counsel inside a corporate entity. You will have extensive expertise in commercial law, public sector and government contracting, regulatory compliance, and corporate governance, with a strong track record of advising on complex, high-value, multi-jurisdictional matters. In this role, you will monitor legal and regulatory developments – including privacy and UK GDPR, data protection, whistleblowing, anti-bribery and corruption, modern slavery, export control, and sanctions – and ensure the legal team delivers effective training and updates across the region.
You bring proven leadership, sound judgment, and the ability to deliver commercially focused legal advice that enables strategic decision-making and mitigates risk. Recognised for your negotiation skills, clear communication, and commercial acumen, you will play a pivotal role in safeguarding compliance, strengthening governance, and enabling sustainable business growth.
This position will need to undertake domestic and international travel and may require an ability to achieve an appropriate UK Security Clearance.
Within the Codan business we recognise and respect the need for flexible working arrangements, however due to the high touch team engagement nature of this role, it will be predominantly based in our office located at Whiteley, Hampshire.
