Band 7 Research Radiographer (IRMER Compliance)

UHB Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) has an exciting opportunity for an IRMER Practitioner role to join the team. This is a shared role across the Hem / Onc research team and RDI with a broader remit for collaborative work across the Advanced Therapies Treatment Centre (ATTC) network. The primary focus of this role is to ensure there is early radiology input into the development of clinical trial and research protocols involving radiological therapies/investigations at University Hospitals Birmingham, the ATTC network and Pharma companies. The role will work closely with the research imaging team to contribute to the efficient set up of trials within UHB and provide insight into achieving accelerated set up times across the ATTC network.

The post holder will be a registered Radiographer with qualifications and experience reflecting a good understanding of IRMER regulatory compliance, clinical trial research, the regulations and guidance covering clinical trials in the UK, HRA, MHRA and commercial sponsor responsibilities for clinical trials involving ionising radiation. The post holder will provide support, advice and liaise with internal and external user groups on day to day matters to ensure the smooth operation of imaging regulation services.


Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of research to ensure optimum safety and care; ensuring studies meet ionising radiation legislative and general safety requirements. This includes acting as an expert resource for colleagues to support them in the design and delivery of safe and valid research. They will be based within University Hospitals Birmingham Research and Development department and will also support the ATTC. They will also work closely with the Research and Development and Radiology departments at Birmingham Health Partner Trusts, research staff at our partner Clinical Trials Unit (CTU), Birmingham CTU, and external agencies including the NIHR and the NIHR Clinical Research Network.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* BSc Hons in Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent
* State Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council UK (HCPC)
* ICH Good Clinical Practice Training


Experience

* Working knowledge of IR(ME)R 2017
* Experience in the use of ionising and non‑ionising radiation in healthcare, medical imaging evaluation, radiation detection and measurement.
* Ability to test a range of non‑ionising equipment.
* Specialist knowledge of the techniques employed to measure the performance and radiological safety of a range of X‑ray imaging equipment.
* Knowledge of national standards, professional and other guidelines relevant to the specialist area.
* Knowledge of radiation protection legislation in healthcare and biomedical research
* Ability to test a wide range of diagnostic X‑ray imaging equipment
* Understanding of clinical research and trial management methodology, including regulatory requirements, and a proven ability to apply these to the coordination of clinical trials.
* Experience preparing regulatory and ethics submissions, grant applications, writing and/or amending protocols, patient information, trial management forms, reports and other documents.
* Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010 and understands how to ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
* Application of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) to trial management.
* To possess knowledge of Research Governance and current legislation relating to imaging and research.
* Experience preparing publications and submitting grant applications is desirable.


Additional Criteria

* Proficient in using Excel, Word, Access, etc, or equivalent.
* Ability to acquire and analyse highly complex data.
* Ability to produce written reports within a defined timescale.
* Ability to communicate scientific concepts to other staff.
* Ability to work as a member of a team and with staff in other disciplines.
* Proven administrative, project management and supervisory skills.
* Ability to work on own initiative and problem solve.
* Excellent IT skills, ideally including the design, maintenance and interrogation of complex relational databases.
* Effective communication, negotiation, presentation and interpersonal skills.
* Critical and intelligent attention to detail high standard of accuracy.
* Ability to meet the travel needs of the post.
* Be able to operate manual handling aids as provided by the Department including patient slide boards, sheets, hoists and trolleys.
* Be able to operate and move full range of radiographic equipment including over‑couch tubes, mobile Image Intensifiers with monitors and mobile x‑ray machines (motorised and non‑motorised).
