Job Summary
Main duties of the job include:
* Delivering high‑quality pharmaceutical care to oncology and haematology patients in our Day Treatment Unit – The Meadows and Haematology inpatient ward.
* Collaborating with cancer pharmacists, PASU, Boots Pharmacy, and clinical teams to coordinate chemotherapy and supportive medicines.
* Supporting patients through counselling and discharge planning to improve medicines use and reduce errors.
* Leading on medicines reconciliation and assessing patients’ own drugs.
* Providing administrative support for private healthcare, including scheduling treatments and maintaining accurate cost records.
* Working with pharmacists to calculate quotes and ensure pricing is up to date.
* Liaising with the Private Healthcare team, Cancer Pharmacy Team, PASU, Boots Pharmacy, and the purchasing team.
* Contributing to service improvement projects, audits, and training, and providing Accredited Checking Technician services in the dispensary.

Job Responsibilities
* Independently deliver admission, supply and discharge services to nominated wards and clinics, liaising with pharmacists, doctors and nursing staff.
* Undertake drug histories for patients receiving first systemic anti‑cancer therapy (SACT) on The Meadows.
* On admission, check medicines against patient information, Summary Care Record (SCR), GP letter and nursing home records, taking detailed medication histories.
* Assess and remove redundant medicines with patient permission.
* Order medication not brought into hospital when required.
* Counsel patients on medication use and provide written information.
* Prioritise and organise daily workload to meet allocated timescales.
* Ensure continuing supply of medicines at discharge in compliance with aids.
* Facilitate timely processing of To‑Take‑Away (TTAs) and supportive medications with Cancer Pharmacy Team and Boots Pharmacy.
* Coordinate discharge team, allocate work and liaise with the Dispensary Team Leader.
* Provide administrative support for private healthcare: treatment scheduling, accurate cost records, quote calculation and regular pricing updates.
* Maintain effective communication with Great Western Hospitals Private Healthcare team, Cancer Pharmacy Team, PASU, Boots Pharmacy and purchasing team.
Person Specification – Essential
* Professional registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
* Accredited Checking Technician and Medicines Optimisation qualifications.
* Experience as a hospital Pharmacy Technician or supervisory experience within a community pharmacy.
* Recent practical experience in a busy Pharmacy environment and experience of training individuals.
* Good knowledge of current hospital pharmacy practice, medicines optimisation issues, therapeutic drug use and legal dispensing requirements.
* Excellent organisational, time‑management and IT skills (Word, Outlook, intranet).
* Strong communication skills, ability to work flexibly and lead a team.
Person Specification – Desirable
* Accredited Checking Technician qualification or eligibility to achieve it within one year.
* Completion of Pharmacy Medicines Optimisation Training Programme.
* NVQ assessor to A1 standard or willingness to pursue training, up to 18 months.
* In‑depth post‑qualification experience in a hospital pharmacy.
* Experience in procedure development and supervision in a high‑pressure environment.
* Knowledge of Good Distribution Practice (EU GDP 2013/C 343/01) and relevant regulations.
* Knowledge of hospital pharmacy computer systems (CMM, Careflow).
