Job Context
Birmingham International Academy (BIA) is part of Academic Services and collaborates with Colleges to provide Presessional English, Academic English and Foundation programmes. BIA has an international cohort and is responsible for safeguarding students under 18. It is accredited by the British Council.
Job Summary
The Social Organiser will work within the BIA Operations and Administrative team during the summer period. Responsibilities include organising social events for the international student cohort (approximately 1000 students and 100+ teachers), staying within budget, risk assessing events (especially for under‑18s) and coordinating with external providers.
Main Duties
* Work with a small team of social organisers to oversee social activities.
* Welcome students and deliver an introductory presentation on the first day.
* Plan evening and weekend social activities, including online events, to help students familiarise with the campus and Birmingham.
* Encourage students to develop speaking and listening skills during events.
* Publicise events to Programme Directors and key staff.
* Disseminate information via newsletter, posters, email and CANVAS.
* Conduct health & safety assessments and risk assessments for all events and trips.
* Lead weekly meetings with Administrative Staff about events and activities.
* Organise an end‑of‑term party, managing the budget for venue, décor, food, music and entertainment.
* Work within a specified budget.
* Other duties as reasonably required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience
* Good literacy and numeracy (GCSE Maths and English A‑C/4‑9 or equivalent). If no equivalent qualification, relevant work experience to demonstrate necessary skills.
* Experience working in a similar environment.
* Proficient in Microsoft Office.
* Accuracy and attention to detail.
* Excellent team working and written and verbal communication skills.
* Customer‑focused approach.
* Ability to organise own workload.
* Understanding of how diversity considerations affect own area (e.g. dietary requirements, dress code).
Further Details
* This role requires students to have full availability to work full time (37 hours per week) during the summer break.
* Applicants must be undergraduate, Masters, or PhD students in the appropriate stage or other exceptions that allow full time hours during summer. Applicants must be current University of Birmingham students.
* The University of Birmingham restricts all students to working up to 20 hours per week during term time for a maximum of 13 consecutive weeks. If your course schedule differs, a formal agreement with your supervisor must be in place.
* International students must apply for an authorised absence with the Registry.
* Right to work checks must be completed before work commences.
