About the Role

NPL is seeking an experienced Higher Scientist based in Teddington to plan and deliver a number of technical activities to advance our research. This full‑time Research Scientist role offers a generous salary and benefits package.

Responsibilities

* Sharing your learnings so that we all benefit and mentoring those with less experience than you
* Developing partnerships to strengthen our capability
* Acting as an ambassador for our work externally and being willing to promote what we do
* Providing technical support for bids we may be undertaking

About You

NPL wishes to appoint a research scientist to join its Engineering Biology multidisciplinary team developing innovative tools and reference standards to address the challenges of reproducibility, traceability, and comparability in Engineering Biology. We are looking for a chemist, biochemist or molecular biologist with prior experience in DNA synthesis and assembly, mRNA or phage displays, or cell‑free systems. In your work at NPL, you will operate, develop and maintain a state‑of‑the‑art reference biofoundry with a particular emphasis on de novo DNA. You will collect and analyse data and prepare technical reports for publications and commercial contracts, contribute to the delivery of various R&D projects in partnership with industry, and support collaborative initiatives with research organisations in the UK and abroad.

To be successful in this role, you should have a science‑related degree with relevant expertise in the field, and you should be experienced in working in a team, planning and delivering complex research projects from conception to fruition. Beyond that, we’re looking for someone who will thrive in our collaborative environment.

Diversity & Inclusion

NPL and DSIT have strong commitments to diversity and equality of opportunity, and welcome applications from candidates irrespective of their background, gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, or age, provided they meet the required criteria. Applications from women, disabled, and black, Asian, and minority ethnic candidates in particular are encouraged. All disabled candidates (as defined by the Equality Act 2010) who satisfy the minimum criteria for the role will be guaranteed an interview under the Disability Confident Scheme.
