Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Defence Sector (Cranes & Lifting Systems)

We’re seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead complex design projects from concept to commissioning. You’ll be the technical authority across multidisciplinary teams, ensuring every solution meets the highest standards of safety, performance, and compliance.
What You’ll Do
* Lead mechanical design across multiple defence projects, from initial concept to final commissioning.
* Approve detailed designs, calculations, drawings, and compliance documentation.
* Balance innovation with commercial viability—delivering robust, cost-effective solutions.
* Manage design budgets, support bids, and drive value engineering.
* Collaborate across project, software, EC&I, manufacturing, and commissioning teams.
* Ensure full compliance with CE, UKCA, and Machinery Directive standards.
* Validate designs through simulation, testing, and FAT/SAT processes.
* Mentor junior engineers and promote best practices across the design function.
What You’ll Bring
* Extensive experience in mechanical design within complex, project-led environments.
* Strong knowledge of materials, manufacturing, and design for assembly.
* Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Inventor) and 2D drawing standards.
* Skilled in engineering calculations, substantiation reports, and compliance documentation.
* Commercial awareness and budget management experience.
* Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
* Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent); Chartered or working towards CEng/IEng preferred.
* Experience in Defence, Nuclear, Aerospace, or Infrastructure sectors desirable.
* Familiarity with automation, moving machinery, Eurocodes, and FEA tools (e.g. ANSYS).
