Overview

The role includes supervision of the Neonatal Unit, postnatal wards and Transitional Care in Hull Women’s and Children’s Hospital. You will contribute to the tertiary neonatal unit advice service to Level 1 and 2 services in the Humber & North Yorkshire units via the Embrace referral and transport service. As a training hospital, you will provide support to trainees in induction, teaching and training, and act as clinical and educational supervisor.

A number of outpatients will be included in the rota, including clinics by telephone/video and face-to-face for GP referrals under the age of 1 year and for neonatal patients after discharge.

Working with the Neonatal team, you will engage in service development and national strategies for critical care and quality improvement. The role also involves engaging with external agencies (e.g., coroner and social care) as required in your capacity as named consultant for the babies.


Responsibilities

* Contribute to departmental duties such as organization of junior doctor rotas, guideline development and other aspects of governance.
* Supervise junior doctor audit and supervision of junior doctor teaching sessions including induction.
* Participate in the educational supervision of trainees and support undergraduate teaching within the HYMS medical school curriculum where applicable.
* Engage with service development and implement national strategies for critical care and quality improvement.
* Manage and contribute to clinical governance activities and attendance at service meetings.


Job Plan and Duties

* A standard full-time Job Plan will contain 10 programmed activities (PAs): 8 PAs for direct clinical care (DCC) and 2 PAs for supporting activities (SPAs).
* 1.5 SPAs are classed as ‘core’ and cover time for training, teaching, CPD, audit, appraisal, clinical governance and attendance at service meetings.
* Opportunities exist to participate in undergraduate teaching within the HYMS medical school curriculum.
* Additional SPA time can be allocated for research, clinical management and educational supervisor activity. The post envisages educational supervision of at least one trainee per year across levels from FY1 to specialty registrar.
* Appointees are encouraged to develop their management skills with potential responsibilities in educational activities, audit, junior doctor management, recruitment, etc. Personal preferences can be accommodated with training provided.
* Additional PA time is negotiable for more senior management, research or educational roles within the department.
