Applications are invited for a band 7 Clinical Scientist position in the Regional Radiation Protection Service (RRPS) within the Department of Medical Physics at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford.
You will join a team of 25 medical physicists, technicians, and computer scientists supported by an admin team. The service provides comprehensive radiation protection, diagnostic radiology, and x-ray engineering services to NHS Trusts, private healthcare providers, dentists, veterinary practices, and others. We are active in research, development, and training, organizing courses locally and nationally. The Service collaborates with the University of Surrey’s MSc programmes in Medical Physics, Medical Imaging, and Radiation and Environmental Protection. Opportunities for teaching, research, and development are encouraged.
Main duties of the job
The postholder will support all aspects of the work, including calculations, measurements, and radiation surveys on all types of diagnostic X-ray systems, as well as non-ionising areas such as MRI, ultrasound, lasers, and UV. Radiation protection support is also provided to Nuclear Medicine departments, PET/CT scanners, and radiotherapy centres. The candidate should be enthusiastic, a good communicator, and a team player. The post holder will be encouraged to work towards MPE / RPA / RWA / LPA certification and potentially join the HSST training scheme. A good honours degree in physical sciences and completion or near-completion of the STP training scheme or an equivalent is required. Travel is involved, and a current driving license is essential.
Applicants not fully meeting the job description but in training will be considered at a lower grade, with potential for upgrading upon meeting the full requirements.

Person specification
Qualifications
* Masters level education in medical physics, radiation protection, or equivalent
* Registration as a clinical scientist or working towards HCPC registration
Knowledge and Skills
* Understanding of ionising radiation risks, use, and protection
* Knowledge of relevant legislation and standards (e.g., IRR17, IR(ME)R2017, ISO 9001)
* Experience with measurement techniques for X-ray and other radiation equipment
* Understanding of clinical radiation risks
* Ability to work independently and exercise initiative
* Knowledge of ultrasound and non-ionising radiation safety
* Membership of IPEM or equivalent
