The role:

HSCW experience is desirable not essential as full training will be given. The Health Care Support Worker carries out direct patient care in support of and supervised by a Registered Nurse. The purpose of the care is to perform the necessary tests required for patients visiting our Ophthalmology departments and staying as an inpatient in Ward 1c. The successful candidate will be expected to work as part of the Ophthalmology team, supporting the registered nurses and be involved in all care needs within the outpatient setting. You will be required to work within a busy clinical area working collaboratively as part of the multidisciplinary team.


Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

* A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Health Care Support Worker based in the Ophthalmology outpatient department of Gartnavel General Hospital
* The shift pattern for this post is between Monday to Saturday day shifts
* Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part time hours


Key responsibilities:

Clinical Duties:

* Demonstrates care and compassion to patients, carers and relatives to help ensure high quality person centred patient care is delivered at all times.
* To carry out a range of assigned patient care tasks as directed by a Registered Nurse to ensure delivery of a high quality of patient care.
* To assist with personal care when and where required.

These will include:

* Visual Acuity using the appropriate method including Snellan and Complog systems
* Visual Fields
* I Care Tonometry
* OCT Scans
* Use of Focimeter to check patient prescription
* Instillation of Eye Drops
* Phlebotomy
* To deal with questions and enquiries from patients, carers and relatives e.g. on the clients’ condition or for any suggestions or complaints that they wish to raise and where appropriate, refer these to a Registered Nurse
* Assist with the safe transfer of all patients
* Communicates/liaises with members of the multi‑disciplinary team to ensure high standards of patient care
* Assist other members of the Multi‑Disciplinary team to deliver patient care
* To timeously report any observed changes in the patients’ physical/ psychological needs to the Registered Nurse
* Performs a range of tests and report results to Registered Nurse, e.g. urinalysis, blood pressure, pregnancy testing, patient observations, basic PC skills, cannula removal, escorting patients through the department and making accurate records within documentation, and other similar tasks

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

* Caring disposition preferably with experience working in a caring environment /role
* Ability to work with people and as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Good written and verbal communication skills
* Ability to follow protocols for work areas and contribute to review of these protocols
* Ability to prioritise workload and exercise initiative
* Flexible with potential to work on other sites if staffing needs require
* Good keyboard skills
* Ability to carry out assigned tasks effectively in a busy environment
* Ability to fulfil the requirement of the job description
* Proficient in Microsoft Office particularly in word

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro‑ra­ta basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
