Senior Engineer – Fixed Term Contract (Operations)

Duration: 30‑Month Fixed Term Contract
About the Organisation: SONI (Transmission System Operator, TSO) is responsible for the safe, secure and reliable supply of electricity in Northern Ireland, supporting competition in energy, promoting economic growth, facilitating renewable energy and providing essential services. As a TSO we operate closely with EirGrid and the National Energy System Operator and manage the Single Electricity Market (SEM), the wholesale electricity market on the Island of Ireland.
The Team: The Operations Directorate delivers the operation, development and enhancement of the power system and the wholesale electricity market. SONI Operations also implements transmission system and market development to meet future needs. The team offers opportunities across system analysis, technical policy, procedure development and specifications, as well as Control Centre readiness, Grid and Network Code management, technical audits and compliance.
Key Functions:
* System Operations: Core activity of SONI – keeping the lights on through meticulous planning and engineering analysis such as load‑flow studies. The team develops and tests operational systems, tools, services and policies, liaises on outages, voltage control, generator testing, scheduling and dispatch, risk management, emergency response and security of supply.
* Markets, System Support and Analysis: Facilitates end‑to‑end grid connection lifecycle, manages Grid Code and Network Code compliance, performs performance analysis on wind, solar, batteries and conventional units, publishes market data, supports tariff and charge development, and performs techno‑economic modelling.
About You
* Engineering degree or equivalent, with a minimum of 4 years post‑qualification experience in power system operations.
* Ability to work collaboratively with customers, internal and external stakeholders.
* Strong communication and diplomacy skills, able to guide, persuade, and influence others.
* Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills, capable of independent work under minimal supervision.
* Track record of delivery and ability to develop innovative proposals and solutions.
* Strong analytical skills, comfortable with large data sets and able to derive conclusions.
* Good oral and written communication skills, able to explain technical concepts to non‑technical audiences.
* Professional, detail‑oriented work ethic and flexible working approach.
